Kenner police arrest three women for leaving baby and dog locked ...

Kenner police arrested three women Nov. 8 after leaving a 10-month-old baby and a dog inside a locked car with the window partially rolled down while they shopped at the Walmart at 300 W. Esplanade Ave. An off-duty Kenner officer working a security detail was flagged down by a concerned citizen at around 8 p.m. who reported hearing a child crying from inside a locked vehicle.

Officers located the mother, Quija Hawkins, 18, the grandmother, Lisa Hawkins, 38, and the infants' aunt, Troynisha Hawkins, 17, inside the store. The women told the officers they didn't want to wake the baby who was sleeping in a child safety seat. So after making sure the doors were locked and the window was partially opened, they left the infant inside the car with their dog for approximately 15 to 30 minutes while they shopped.

Officers noted that at the time of incident the New Orleans International Airport reported that it was 53 degrees outside. A review of surveillance cameras revealed the Hawkins were inside the store for over 45 minutes before they were located.

The Hawkins, who told officers they live at 6320 Riverside Dr. in Metairie, were arrested and charged with child desertion. The Office of Community Services and Child Protection were notified of the incident, and the infant was placed with a second grandmother who arrived on scene. The City of Kenner Humane Department took custody of the dog.

The women were released Nov. 9 from the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center on a $1,000 commercial bond each.
