Bank of Canada chief: "A lot" of headwinds hitting economy

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney, on the heels of telling markets that an interest rate hike was not imminent, offered several reasons on Wednesday for why the central bank has kept rates exceptionally low.

"There are a lot of headwinds against the Canadian economy from the rest of the world, there's a challenge to encourage business to invest, there are pressures on the currency," Carney told a parliamentary committee.

"There are a variety of reasons why it's advantageous to have very accommodative monetary policy and that's what we have here in Canada, very accommodative monetary policy."

The Bank of Canada is the only central bank in the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations which has hinted at raising interest rates. But Carney has effectively cautioned that it will be some time before it withdraws monetary stimulus.

That message was reinforced on Wednesday by data showing the Canadian economy shrank in August for the first time in six months, an unexpected contraction that pointed to a sharp slowdown in third-quarter growth.

HOUSING MARKET, DEBT GROWTH COOLING

Carney, who was testifying to the Senate banking committee following the release of the bank's quarterly Monetary Policy Report, was asked what could be done to contain what has been a hot housing market and high household debt levels.

He repeated his line that moving rates higher should be the last line of defense, though he said that ideally monetary policy should be complementary to other government measures.

Carney said condominium markets remained hot while other parts of the housing sector were adjusting to government measures to tighten mortgage insurance rules.

He warned that even if the central bank does not raise its main policy rate, individuals face the risk of higher mortgages rates because of what happens to the bond market.

"There are scenarios where there could be an increase over time in government bond rates, not because of monetary policy but because of just the sheer level of borrowing and uncertainty that develop on a global scale about the sustainability, so a credit premium coming into those bonds, and so that would also affect mortgage rates as well over time," he said.

Carney is also chairman of the international Financial Stability Board, and he addressed the issue of banks being considered too big to fail.

"There are two broader issues for a country like Canada that need to be considered. The first is relative size of the financial sector versus the economy as a whole ... We don't think this is the case in Canada but there were other economies in the world where the size of their financial sector was multiples of their GDP," he said.

"Every economy has to think about this question of ending too big to fail, and ending the perception of too big to fail and ... ending too big to fail is central to the agenda of the Financial Stability Board and by extension to Canada as a whole."

Carney said he did not believe there should be a specific cap on the size of banks in Canada, as there is in some other countries. But he said there was an effective limit on concentration and size, with the ultimate responsibility held by the finance minister.

At six months, development of children with autism like those without

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? The development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is much like that of children without ASD at 6 months of age, but differs afterwards. That's the main finding of the largest prospective, longitudinal study to date comparing children with early and later diagnosis of ASD with children without ASD. The study appears in the journal Child Development and has implications for clinical work, public health, and policy.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Aging Brain Center at the Institute for Aging Research and Hebrew SeniorLife at Harvard Medical School.

The study sought to learn more about the patterns of development during the first three years of life in children with and without ASD to better understand how ASD can be detected as early as possible. It is the first prospective study to examine early-onset ASD (by 14 months) and later-onset ASD (after 14 months) over the first three years, pinpointing where development looks the same and where it diverges.

ASD comprises a group of disorders of brain development that affects about 1 in 88 American children.

Researchers looked at 235 primarily White children with and without an older sibling with autism, testing them at regular intervals from ages 6 to 36 months. Using standardized and play-based assessments, they tested children's fine motor skills, understanding of spoken language, and spoken language production skills. They also measured how often the children shared their emotions and initiated communication with others.

The study looked at early development across three groups: children without ASD, children with ASD who were identified by 14 months, and children with ASD identified after 14 months. At 6 months, development within the early- and later-identified ASD groups was comparable to each other and to the non-ASD group. At 14 and 18 months, the early-identified ASD group performed below the later-identified ASD group in many aspects of development. By 24 to 36 months, the two groups showed similar levels of development.

"Results show that ASD has a preclinical phase when detecting it may be difficult," explains Rebecca Landa, director of the Kennedy Krieger Institute's Center for Autism and Related Disorders and the study's lead author. "In some children with ASD, early signs of developmental disruption may not be ASD-specific.

"Routinely administering general developmental screeners, such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, should begin in infancy, complemented by ASD-specific screeners by 14 months," suggests Landa. "Screening should be repeated through early childhood. If concerning signs of delay associated with ASD are observed in a child who scores normally on standardized tests, further assessment is warranted."

Win More Business With SMS | Entrepreneur Magazine

Connect with your customers through SA?s biggest platform: mobile.

Did you know that every business has quick and easy access to a powerful communications channel that can reach almost all of its customers? Mobile marketing and specifically SMS is still one of the most effective ways that small companies can use to grow their businesses.

Here are some guidelines for setting up an effective mobile communication programme for your business:

1. Keep it in the family

Outgoing SMS is better for communicating with your existing clients, so don?t try to use it to ?cold call?. This is not effective and creates a negative perception with your potential clients. People have learnt to live with email spam, but SMS spam is very badly received.

Use SMS to share news of special offers, and new products and services with your existing customers. Get permission to SMS them and find out what they are interested in hearing about or what information they need from you.

2. Keep it short

You can use SMS to convert pretty much anything ? packaging, billboards, fliers, TV and radio ads ? into an interactive communication tool. Using a shortcode and a range of keywords is more practical than a regular length number, but too many small companies think shortcodes are complicated, expensive and only for big companies.

Using a bulk SMS aggregator will take care of all these complexities, is affordable, and should include a management tool for you to easily manage your databases and communications.

This management tool will allow you set up your keywords, and even double keywords to route messages correctly. You can also setup auto-responses and confirmation messages as appropriate. To use this tool, you don?t need to be a programmer, but a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) will allow customers to design their own campaigns and add additional interactivity.

3. Reach more people

South Africa has more than 100% cell phone penetration. While this doesn?t mean that every man, woman and child owns a cell phone, it does make it likely that most of your customers have access to SMS as opposed to email or even a fixed address. This makes SMS the best way to reach as many of your customers as possible, in the most affordable and effective way.

4. Don?t interrupt

Like with any conversation, an ongoing chat allows you to build a relationship and add value, while rudely interrupting someone is seldom well received. So don?t just SMS special offers and other promos to your database out of the blue, rather develop an ongoing conversation with them by sharing useful ? and requested ? information by SMS, and interspersing this with special offers.

Everyone is different, of course, and with SMS you can personalise your communication according to your customers? preferences. As well as being more effective, you will also be rewarding your most loyal customers, rather than one-off visitors.

5. Be invited

As mentioned, SMS is far more effective when communicating with existing customers, so make sure you set up a system where you capture customers? details to build your database.

At the point of capturing the cell phone number ? whether in-store, via shortcode, or any other way ? make it clear to the customer how you will use their number and how they can opt out of the SMS communications. Checking your customer?s preferences makes it more likely that they will sign up and stay signed up, and also means you don?t send SMSs unnecessarily.

Respect privacy and avoid the temptation of jumpstarting your database with a bought list ? it is highly unlikely that the seller will have permission to pass on the details, resulting in your communications being wasted at best, and annoying and illegal at worst.

AngloGold says Tanzania law changes worry investors

ARUSHA, Tanzania (Reuters) - Tanzania should stick to existing agreements in the fast-growing mining sector or investors will lose confidence, the company which owns the country's biggest gold mine said on Saturday.

Major international miners are still in talks with the government two years after it passed mining legislation that included a rise in royalties on gold exports to 4 percent of gross value from 3 percent of netback value.

The law also required mining companies to pay the government 0.3 percent of their annual turnover, up from the previous requirement of a maximum $200,000 a year.

AngloGold Ashanti told Reuters it expected the Dodoma government to respect its mineral development agreement, which it said was a legal contract signed before the new mining legislation was put in place.

"Our investors obviously expect that those contracts should be honored because they've made an investment for the long term," Gary Davies, managing director of AngloGold's Geita gold mine said in an interview.

"What's key is that the goal posts are stable because otherwise investors will need to factor that into their investments. I think any investor would be concerned about that, we are no different."

East Africa's second biggest economy argues it is not seeing the fruits of soaring commodity prices, in particular gold. It plans to increase the mining sector's contribution to the economy to 10 percent of GDP by 2025 from 3.3 percent last year.

But the miners say hiking taxes and increasing royalties is the wrong approach. They say Tanzania should focus on attracting more investors and issuing additional mining licenses.

Tanzania is Africa's fourth biggest gold producer. Gold export earnings jumped 47 percent to $2.226 billion last year.

HINDERING GROWTH

Major gold mining companies in Tanzania include African Barrick Gold Plc, which has four gold-producing mines, AngloGold Ashanti Ltd and Resolute Mining Ltd.

Tanzania's energy and minerals ministry declared in July that all mining companies had agreed to pay the new royalty rate from May and said the government would keep mining contracts under review in a bid to deepen their economic contributions.

African Barrick Gold, which has four gold mines in Tanzania, is however the only company that has so far publicly announced it will pay the new 4 percent royalty rate.

AngloGold's Davies said negotiations continued over several aspects of the 2010 legislation.

"Investors need to have that degree of certainty and stability in order to put large investments over the long term."

The Geita mine recorded revenues in excess of $4.2 billion over the past decade and paid $683 million to the Treasury during the period in corporate tax, royalties, withholding taxes, payroll taxes and other fees, Davies said.

"Last year we produced 494,000 ounces and we are looking to be in a similar range this year," he said.

Laurent Coche, AngloGold's senior vice-president for sustainability in Africa, said the company wanted talks with Tanzania about how to boost growth of the mining sector.

"There is also a need to distinguish between the short-term issues and long-term issues. We would be willing to be part of a conversation around developing the country's mining vision ... looking at 20 or 30 years down the road," Coche told Reuters.

Other mining companies contacted on the matter directed Reuters to the Tanzania Chamber of Minerals and Energy (TCME), which represents the interests of mining investors.

It has said mining contracts all included fiscal stability clauses and that the unstable legal environment was hindering growth in the mining sector.

African Barrick Gold's Tulawaka gold mine and Resolute Mine's Golden Pride mine are both expected to close down in mid-2013 after depleting their reserves, although work is underway to explore possibilities of mine-life extension.

NASA's Aqua satellite watched from space as Somalia in the Horn of Africa experienced a landfalling tropical cyclone on Oct. 25.

On Oct. 25, NASA's Aqua satellite saw Tropical Storm Murjan begin to make landfall in eastern Somalia, just south of Cape Guardafui. Cape Guardafui is located in the northeastern Bari province and forms the geographical point of the Horn of Africa.

On Oct. 25, 2012 at 0720 UTC (3:20 a.m. EDT) the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured a visible image of Tropical Storm Murjan's western half making landfall on the Horn of Africa while the eastern half of the storm was still over the Arabian Sea.

NASA's Aqua satellite also captured an infrared look at Tropical Storm Murjan as the storm continued moving inland. The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument aboard captured infrared imagery that showed about one-half of the tropical storm had moved over Cape Guardafui, Somalia. The western half of the storm over land, contained some thunderstorms that were reaching high into the troposphere where cloud top temperatures were as cold as -63 Fahrenheit (-52 Celsius) and they have the potential to drop heavy rainfall.

As Murjan progressed on its western track, it continued to push further over the Horn of Africa, specifically in northeastern Somalia.

On Oct. 25 at 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT), Murjan had maximum sustained winds near 35 knots (40.2 mph/64.8 kph). It was located about 140 nautical miles east-southeast of Cape Guardafui, Somalia, near 9.4 North latitude and 50.7 East longitude. Murjan was moving to the west-southwest at 12 knots (13.8 mph/22.2 kph).

As Murjan continues to move over land, convection (rising air that forms thunderstorms that make up the tropical cyclone) continues to deteriorate quickly. Forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center expect Murjan to dissipate over land on Oct. 26.

Strauss-Kahn seeks comeback via conference circuit

PARIS (Reuters) - Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former IMF chief whose French presidential ambitions were shattered by a sex scandal last year, is making a comeback in business and at conferences.

The 63-year-old Strauss-Kahn was accused of trying to rape a New York hotel maid in May 2011. He protested his innocence and criminal charges against him were dropped, though civil proceedings by the woman are still pending.

Now he is promoting himself as a consultant and guest speaker at far-flung points on the world's conference circuit, where participants can demand $100,000 or more to talk for an hour, and five times that sum for star performers such as former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

While Strauss-Kahn's itinerary for now will keep him at some distance from the financial capitals he used to frequent, experts say his economic policy experience and a contact book that many heads of state would envy will stand him in good stead.

"He has the potential to be enormously successful," says Roy Cohen, a New York-based career coach and author of "The Wall Street Professional's Survival Guide".

"He needs to be test-driven first ... If he is able to prove that his intervention and the consultancy advisory work he is doing is powerful and effective, he's going to generate interest."

Strauss-Kahn has been little seen in public in his native France, where until recently media have been portraying him as a shunned and lonely man. Yet in the past year he has delivered keynote speeches at conferences in China, Ukraine, Morocco and South Korea.

He was warmly applauded when he spoke about global economic prospects to hundreds of students and executives in Morocco in September, at an event where his hosts at a private university introduced him not with his grandest former title but simply as Professor Strauss-Kahn, the economist.

He is scheduled to make a second appearance in Morocco at an Arab banking congress in Casablanca in mid-November. Organizers of the meeting declined to comment when contacted by Reuters, as did others hosting conferences Strauss-Kahn is due to attend.

MAGAZINE PHOTO SHOOT

His come-back plan took another step forward last month when he lodged the founding statutes of a consultancy firm, called Parnasse, at the commercial court in Paris.

On top of conference work, public speaking and consulting, Parnasse's statutes show his ambitions stretch to finance, real estate and political services in France and abroad.

Strauss-Kahn this month also gave a rare magazine interview to France's "Le Point", which photographed him relaxing at his new apartment in Paris's Montparnasse district with a tablet computer in his hand.

It was a stark contrast to the image the world watched on TV in May 2011, as he trudged handcuffed and haggard to a U.S. courthouse to be jailed briefly on criminal charges, later dropped, of trying to rape hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo.

But the potential pitfalls that lie ahead were illustrated in March when police had to bundle him into a getaway car as protesting students clashed with security guards after he gave a speech on the world economy at Britain's Cambridge University.

The case will hang over for him for some time yet; though New York prosecutors dropped the charges on the grounds that Diallo was not a reliable witness, the date of her civil suit has yet to be determined.

And in France, a court will rule on November 28 whether to pursue a judicial investigation into a prostitution ring in which he was allegedly involved. He says he has done nothing illegal and is being pursued because of his libertine lifestyle.

Yet if Strauss-Kahn can put those cases behind him, Cohen said time would work in his favor and pointed to other big names on the conference circuit who overcame image problems.

Clinton, who survived sex scandals and an impeachment trial in the late 1990s, now makes millions of dollars a year attending high-profile events.

According to financial declarations his wife Hillary Clinton makes as U.S. Secretary of State, Clinton charged $750,000 for addressing a telecoms event in Hong Kong, and $500,000 for his presence at an Abu Dhabi conference on environmental data.

EURO ZONE PROBLEM SOLVER?

Sylvie Audibert, a Paris-based consultant who coaches corporate executives on topics from stress management to life-makeover decisions, said Europe's economic crisis could give Strauss-Kahn a perfect forum to use his talents.

He recently floated an idea under which Germany and France, which are enjoying low borrowing costs as investors see their debt as safe, devote some of their savings to helping weaker countries in the euro zone.

The idea has generated little visible interest, apart from a blog mention by former Irish Prime Minister John Bruton. Greek government sources have also quashed rumors that he is advising Athens over their debt troubles.

But Audibert said that like others who have held frontline posts in politics and global economic management, Strauss-Kahn may still harbor hopes of one day taking up a public policy role, perhaps at European level.

"We're talking about people with very big egos and very big ambitions," Audibert said. "I am not convinced his ultimate goal is to remain the adviser in the shadows."

Strauss-Kahn himself hinted at his longer-term ambitions in his interview with Le Point.

"I sense a possibility of investing myself in big international projects ... For the moment, my situation stands in the way."

PFT: Cutler thinks Suh hit Monday night was clean

Cam Newton, Warren MoonAP

Few have worked as closely with Cam Newton as Warren Moon, and the Hall of Fame quarterback is still defending last year?s pupil, even while acknowledging his need to improve.

Moon thinks placing too much of the blame for the Panthers? 1-5 start (and the firing of general manager Marty Hurney) at the second-year quarterback?s feet is wrong, and any suggestion he?s a bust is ridiculous.

?I think a lot of this is because so many people want to say ?I told you so? about him, but couldn?t because he was so good last year,? Moon told Yahoo?s Mike Silver in a wide-ranging interview. ?I think people are overreacting. How can he be a bust? He just had one of the great years a rookie has ever had, and now he can?t play? Come on.?

Moon acknowledged he?d like to see Newton adopt a more even-keeled approach, something he?s done more of in recent weeks. But as he did prior to the draft?last year, Moon thinks there?s an undertone of racism to some of the criticism.

?I don?t understand it,? Moon said. ?I heard somebody compare him to Vince Young. It?s the same old crap ? it?s always a comparison of one black to another black. I get tired of it. I get tired of defending it.

?If you want to compare him to someone because of his demeanor, compare him to Jay Cutler. There are a lot of guys who whine and moan. Cam?s not biting anybody?s head off or pushing his linemen. He?s just disgruntled, and not handling losing well, because, think about it, he basically didn?t lose in college.

?I don?t think Cam?s as bad as Cutler, because Cutler looks like he doesn?t give a damn sometimes, or he?s yelling and cussing at someone. Cam, he just looks down when they?re losing.?

Moon also doesn?t think the Panthers coaches are putting Newton in good positions to succeed by ignoring the run game with the talent they have, and leaning too heavily on the read-option principles he ran in college.

?I don?t know why they got away from what they were doing last year,? Moon said. ?They were running more of a pro-style offense, and now they?re going more to the read-option, the stuff he did in college. I think some of it is coaching. I think some of it is they don?t have enough good players yet. And there?s no question he?s not playing as well as last year.

?That offense doesn?t allow you to be an NFL-type quarterback. It?s a lot of tricks, sticking the ball into a running back?s stomach, trying to freeze the defense. Even though he can do that and had success with it in college, I don?t think it serves him well in the long run. You can?t keep going back and forth. I think he?s a little bit confused with the footwork, and I think that?s one of the problems with his accuracy ? his feet are crossed up. Why this change? I think it?s backfiring. I think they?re out-thinking themselves.?

Sounds familiar.

Youngest Aurora theater victim, 6, to be laid to rest

Courtesy of the family via KUSA

Veronica Moser-Sullivan is seen in an undated family photo.

By NBC News staff

Flags flew at half-staff across Colorado on Tuesday as mourners gathered at a Denver church to pay tribute to the youngest victim of the Aurora theater massacre.

Services for 6-year-old Veronica Moser-Sullivan were being held at the Church of the Risen Christ in Denver, followed by a private funeral for the family, according to local media reports.

Veronica was one of 12 people killed in the July 20 shooting at an Aurora movie theater showing the latest Batman movie, ?The Dark Knight Rises."

Her mother, Ashley Moser, was among dozens of theater-goers wounded. She was shot several times and left paralyzed, and also miscarried a pregnancy as a result. She remains at a local rehabilitation center.

Funeral plans for Veronica were delayed while Moser underwent rehab.

James Holmes, 24, a former Ph.D. neuroscience student, is accused of being the theater shooter.

Gov. John Hickenlooper ordered flags be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday in memory of Veronica.

Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com

Flags were lowered in the days after the shooting in memory of those killed in the theater and raised again July 29 after the last scheduled funeral. The governor announced at the time he would lower flags again when the funeral for Veronica was set.

Microsoft, Apple to unveil new products this week

Published: Tue, October 23, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m.

Associated Press

NEW YORK

As the holiday-shopping season approaches, Microsoft and Apple have scheduled major events this week to unveil new gadgets and software.

The Microsoft event Thursday will focus on Windows 8, a major update to its lucrative operating system. The new software will go on sale Friday, and PC manufacturers have a slew of desktops, laptops and tablet computers designed for it.

Apple, meanwhile, is expected to unveil a smaller iPad at an event in San Jose, Calif., today. It comes just weeks after the launch of a new iPhone.

Apple

Apple has done well selling its full-sized tablet computer, which has a screen that measures nearly 10 inches diagonally. But companies such as Amazon.com Inc. and Google Inc. have made in-roads selling tablets with smaller, 7-inch screens and lower price tags.

Apple isn?t commenting on its plans. Tech bloggers and analysts expect that an ?iPad Mini? ? the name isn?t confirmed ? will have a 7.85-inch screen. Estimates on prices vary.

Last month, Apple began selling its iPhone 5. The new phone is bigger, but thinner than previous models and works with faster cellular networks known as 4G.

Apple also updated its phone software and replaced Google Inc.?s mapping service with its own. Apple?s maps app has been derided for inaccuracies and lack of features, prompting CEO Tim Cook to apologize.

Microsoft

Microsoft Corp. will release a new version of the Windows operating system Friday, one that?s designed to work on both traditional computers and tablet devices.

Several PC manufacturers including Lenovo Group Ltd., Hewlett-Packard Co., Samsung Electronics Co. and Dell Inc. already have announced details about new desktops, laptops and tablet computers.

Microsoft plans its own tablet computer, too. It?s new territory for Microsoft, which typically leaves it to others to make devices using its software. Now, it will be competing against its partners.

The Surface tablet will come in two versions, both with 10.6-inch screens, slightly larger than the iPad?s.

One model will run on the same type of lower-energy chips used in the iPad. It will start at $499, also like the newest, full-sized iPads. A keyboard cover will cost an additional $100. That will go on sale Friday.

Ex Venezuelan VP says he met with Fidel Castro

HAVANA (AP) ? Former Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua said Sunday that he met with aging revolutionary icon Fidel Castro for five hours and showed The Associated Press photos of the encounter, quashing persistent rumors that the former Cuban leader was on his deathbed or had suffered a massive stroke.

Jaua also confirmed that the 86-year-old retired Cuban president personally accompanied him to the Hotel Nacional after their meeting Saturday, in which they talked about politics, history, culture and tourism.

"He had the courtesy of bringing me to the hotel," Jaua said Sunday, adding that Castro looked "very well."

Jaua showed a photograph of himself seated in a minibus along with the former Cuban leader, Castro's wife, Dalia Soto del Valle, a hotel executive and several other people. The photo shows Jaua and Castro smiling broadly, and the former Cuban leader is wearing a checked shirt and cowboy hat.

The public appearance was Castro's first in months. A top Hotel Nacional executive told the AP earlier Sunday how Castro had dropped off the Venezuelan guest, then stayed on to chat with hotel staff.

"Fidel Castro was here yesterday, he brought a guest and spoke to workers and hotel leaders for 30 minutes," commercial director Yamila Fuster said. Fuster was not present, but hotel director Antonio Martinez is seated next to Castro in the photo shown by Jaua.

State-run newspaper Trabajadores carried a short story about the meeting between Castro and Jaua, but did not publish any accompanying photographs.

Cuban media also reported that an election worker collected an absentee ballot from Castro at his home and took it to the polls for him. On Sunday, Cubans were voting in municipal elections which the island's leaders hold up as evidence the government is representative. Critics say the process is a sham because there is no campaigning and only the Communist Party is recognized.

Castro's health has been the subject of intense speculation for years, but the rumors gained force in recent days after he failed to publicly congratulate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a top ally, on his Oct. 7 electoral victory. The former Cuban leader has not appeared since March, when he was shown greeting visiting Pope Benedict XVI, and he has also ceased writing his once-constant opinion pieces, the last of which appeared in June.

Twitter and other social media sites have been abuzz with claims of Castro's demise. Late last week, a Venezuelan doctor purported to have information that Castro had suffered a stroke, but the same doctor has previously claimed knowledge that turned out to be false.

Sunday's news from the Hotel Nacional appeared to be Cuba's attempt to hit back against what it says are false and malicious rumors. A letter attributed to Castro was published Thursday by Cuban state media. In it, he congratulated graduates of a medical school on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

Two close family members of Castro have also recently denied he is in grave condition. Juanita Castro, the former leader's sister, told the AP in Miami that reports of her brother's condition are "pure rumors" and "absurd."

Son Alex Castro told a reporter for a weekly Cuban newspaper that his father "is well, going about his daily life."

Castro stepped down in 2006 following a severe illness, handing power to his brother Raul.

McCarron, No. 1 Alabama rout Tennessee 44-13

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Practicing against the nation's best defense each day apparently is helping Alabama develop a championship-caliber offense.

A.J. McCarron threw for a career-high 306 yards and four touchdowns Saturday night as the top-ranked Crimson Tide trounced Tennessee 44-13 at Neyland Stadium. The Tide have scored at least 30 points in each of their first seven games, the longest streak to start a season in school history.

McCarron's four touchdown passes matched a career high set twice previously. He has 16 touchdown tosses with no interceptions this season. The junior quarterback called it the most complete game Alabama has played all year.

"We set the tone and we stayed on it," he said. "We never let up, and that was the biggest thing Coach keeps preaching."

McCarron got plenty of help from a pair of freshmen.

Amari Cooper caught seven passes for 162 yards, the most receiving yards ever by an Alabama freshman. He scored on a 23-yard reception in the first quarter and a 42-yard catch in the third. Cooper also had a 30-yard touchdown in the third period nullified by a penalty.

T.J. Yeldon ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries for his second consecutive game with at least 100 yards.

"We just kept grinding and grinding," Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said. "We squandered a few opportunities at times, but I think the key to the drill was just keep playing and play the next play. Compete and be relentless in how you do it."

Alabama's defense also was as relentless as ever.

Tennessee (3-4, 0-4 SEC) had scored at least 31 points in each of its first six games, but the Volunteers couldn't muster much offense against an Alabama team that entered Saturday leading the nation in total defense, scoring defense, run defense and pass efficiency defense.

Tyler Bray went 13 of 27 for 184 yards with two interceptions and no touchdown passes for Tennessee.

Tennessee has lost 11 of its last 12 SEC games and is 0-14 against the Top 25 since Derek Dooley took over the program in 2010. The different circumstances surrounding each team were evident from a look at the stands, as more than one-third of the 102,455 fans were cheering for Alabama (7-0, 4-0). By the midway point of the fourth quarter, many of the Tennessee fans already had headed to the parking lot.

"We got whipped by a great football team in just about every phase," Dooley said. "I'm really disappointed we didn't execute a little better on offense. That's probably the thing I was a little surprised at. The quarterback didn't play well. I'm not sure why."

Dooley returned to the sidelines less than two weeks after undergoing surgery on a fractured right hip. Dooley had worked from the press box last week in a 41-31 loss at Mississippi State. Tennessee officials said before the game he'd sit on a stool throughout the game, but he instead worked the sidelines on crutches while frequently being shadowed by an officer as well as assistant coach Antone Davis.

Tennessee's beleaguered defense forced a three-and-out on Alabama's opening possession, but the Tide scored on four of the next five drives to take a 23-10 halftime lead. Alabama's lone scoreless series the rest of the first half came when Cade Foster was wide right on a 44-yard field-goal attempt.

Cooper opened the scoring and put Alabama ahead for good when a coverage breakdown by Tennessee allowed him to get all alone in the right corner of the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown. Yeldon added a 1-yard TD run in the second quarter after C.J. Mosley's diving interception of Bray's wobbly pass gave the Tide the ball at the Tennessee 32.

"Awesome," McCarron said of Cooper. "(He) doesn't surprise me one bit. He can be as good as he wants to be. As long as he keeps working and keeps putting forth the effort, the sky's the limit for that kid."

The Vols' best hopes for a second-half comeback disappeared when they lost the ball on downs after reaching the Alabama 33 early in the third quarter. After Bray threw a third-and-1 incompletion, Tennessee linebacker A.J. Johnson took a fourth-down snap out of the Vols' "Beast" formation and was stopped short of the first down.

Alabama then put the game away by reaching the end zone on its next three drives.

McCarron connected with Cooper on a 42-yard touchdown pass that extended the Tide's lead to 30-10 late in the third quarter. McCarron found Kenny Bell for a 39-yard completion that made it 37-10, then Yeldon raced 43 yards around the right end with 9:07 left in the game.

"That's the greatest feeling in the world as an offensive lineman, (when) in the fourth quarter you can tell that you can run the ball," Alabama center Barrett Jones said. "They know it's a run, and you know it's a run, and you can still run it."

Before the game, Tennessee honored former Vols coach Phillip Fulmer and his 1997 SEC championship team that featured Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who made it to campus for the ceremony.

Does Email Marketing Really Work on your business/blogs?

Email marketing is the process of maintaining ongoing communication with customers and potential customers through the use of email.? A question that often arises is whether or not email marketing really works.? The answer is yes ? mass email through a well-planned email marketing campaign is a valuable tool for small businesses, corporations, and internet entrepreneurs.? To better answer the question of whether or not email marketing works, we must first consider its purpose.

email marketing

What is the Purpose of Email Marketing?

While many people who are unfamiliar with email marketing may think that it is simply about pushing products and services onto customers, there is much more to it than that.? Email marketing is more about customer communication management which is a part of customer relationship management.? As such, in addition to sales emails there are numerous other purposes a company may send an email to their list.? These include:

  • Newsletter emails that allow the recipient to keep up to date with company and industry news as well as be provided with interesting, niche-related information
  • Catalog emails which allow the recipient to browse through a products and service listing.
  • Survey emails which allow the recipient to provide feedback to the company.
  • Press release emails which notify recipients of upcoming products and services they may be interested in.
  • Thank-you emails which show the recipient that they are important to the company.

Given all of the purposes of email marketing, it should become clear that it is not all about selling but is more about bigger-picture goals and in that sense, email marketing works wonders.? Now that we?ve considered the purpose of email marketing, let?s look at how to make email marketing work for you.

Making Email Marketing Work for You

Executing a successful email marketing campaign is not as simple as writing out a text-based email attempting to directly sell a product or service.? However, the process doesn?t have to be as difficult as one may think.

In order to make an email marketing campaign work for your company, the first step is to identify your goals.? Do you simply want to provide your list with information that will build a relationship between you and the recipients or do you want to sell products and services directly to them?? Do you want to gather data from them or simply thank them for their loyalty?? Likely you?ll want to do many of these things but defining your goals ahead of time will keep the process running smoothly.

Once you?ve identified your goals, you should begin planning your campaign.? This includes deciding when and how many emails to send as well as preparing the copy, templates, and other required promotional material.? After that?s taken care of, it?s simply a matter of executing the campaign based on the plan.

Does Email Marketing Work?

The short answer is yes.? Through the use of proper email marketing techniques including well-defined goals and great execution of a solid campaign plan, email marketing is a great way to increase your revenues and grow your business.

13inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display reportedly caught with 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, dual Thunderbolt ports in clear view

We hope you didn't want Apple's little event next week to be a complete surprise. After promises of extra details for a prior leak, a WeiPhone forum goer has returned with photos of what's supposed to be the active screen and ports of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display that might be on stage come October 23rd. If this is what we get alongside the similarly unofficial miniature iPad, we'll take it. The possible leak shows a 2,560 x 1,600 LCD (four times higher in resolution than the existing MacBook Pro) and, importantly, no sacrifices in expansion versus the 15-inch Retina model -- there's still the dual Thunderbolt ports and HDMI video that shipped with this system's bigger brother. Vital details like the performance and price are left out, so there's a few cards left off Apple's table, but the images hint at what could be a tempting balance between the 15-inch MacBook Pro's grunt and the MacBook Air's grace.
