Red algae bloom closes Sydney's beaches, but probably not for long

Bloody waters before summer has even started may sound like a drag on tourism, but it's a mere drop in the sea for Australia.

By Helen Clark,?Contributor / November 28, 2012

A couple of young surfers play with a small wave during a morning surf at Coogee beach in Sydney, Australia, in October. A red algae bloom has closed 10 beaches so far in and around Sydney and up the more northerly Central Coast in Australia during the past 24 hours.

Don?t worry. It?s not blood. It?s not even poisonous, just an irritant to skin and eyes and to anyone hoping for a swim now that summer?s finally about to hit Sydney.

A red algae bloom has closed 10 beaches so far in and around Sydney and up the more northerly Central Coast in Australia during the past 24 hours.?And more beach closures could be on the way, say officials. But aside from some startlingly other-world pictures, it's not likely to scare away the tourists.

The "crimson tide," or an algal bloom that has variously been compared to shark attacks or oily tomato sauce in the Aussie media, washed up on Sydney shores earlier this week, temporarily closing famed tourist beaches like Bondi. But it doesn't seem like too many around here are worried.

Turns out the blood-colored algal bloom isn?t a result of pollution, but rather an upswelling of nutrient-rich waters that the buoyant algae can feed off. Two different blooms have apparently come from the same source and essentially floated to Sydney?s shores. Their ammonia-rich diet can cause skin and eye irritations but little else problematic, according to experts.?

"This bloom has likely occurred as a result of the upwelling of nutrient-rich deep ocean water on to the continental shelf," the Metropolitan Sydney, South Coast, and Hunter Regional Algal Coordinating Committees told media Tuesday.?They said tests had identified the algae as noctiluca scintillans or "Sea Sparkle" (for its phosphorescence) and pointed out that?most algal blooms last around a week.?

Despite the closure of Sydney?s favorite beaches on the cusp of a hot summer ? and a possible heat wave of a weekend, with temperatures predicted to pass 100 Fahrenheit ? it?s doubtful this red tide will cause any longstanding problems either for locals or the tourism industry. And in the meantime, not all of Sydney's beaches are closed, and there are plenty of hotels with swimming pools.

And anyway, Australia has faced much worse in the water: Real blood in the water with the odd shark attacks, or stings from one of the many species of?box jellyfish?like the Chironex fleckeri, the world?s most venomous animal. The sting from this particular jellyfish can cause death in minutes, according to Australian jellyfish experts.

It will take much more to keep people from hitting Sydney's beaches.

NASA says enough ice on Mercury to encase Washington, DC

New evidence suggests Mercury's north polar region contains large deposits of ice (NASA/Johns Hopkins Universi??NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft has discovered evidence that the planet Mercury has enough ice on its surface that it could encase Washington, DC in a block two and a half miles deep.

"For more than 20 years the jury has been deliberating on whether the planet closest to the Sun hosts abundant water ice in its permanently shadowed polar regions," writes Sean Solomon of the Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, principal investigator of the MESSENGER mission. "MESSENGER has now supplied a unanimous affirmative verdict."

"These reflectance anomalies are concentrated on poleward-facing slopes and are spatially collocated with areas of high radar backscatter postulated to be the result of near-surface water ice," Gregory Neumann of the NASA Goddard Flight Center writes in the paper. "Correlation of observed reflectance with modeled temperatures indicates that the optically bright regions are consistent with surface water ice."

The study results were published Wednesday in Science magazine, which explains in its summary, "The buried layer must be nearly pure water ice. The upper layer contains less than 25 wt.% water-equivalent hydrogen. The total mass of water at Mercury's poles is inferred to be 2 ? 1016 to 1018 g and is consistent with delivery by comets or volatile-rich asteroids."

Radar imaging of Mercury has long suggested that there could be large deposits on the planet's surface, with reports dating back to 1991. But today's report presents harder evidence backing up that theory.

MESSENGER has fired more than 10 million laser imaging pulses at Mercury's surface since arriving in orbit in 2011. Feedback from those pulses have helped NASA in its quest to verify whether ice is present in Mercury's poles, which are largely shielded from exposure to the sun's rays.

SEO Charleston - Work On the Internet

In the last few years, SEO Charleston programs have become overly popular among South Carolina's finest online businesses. Behind this tale of success is a firm foundation of professional and highly skilled online marketing programs. What is the secret behind the success of these southern entrepeneurs?

Among online vendors it is now common knowledge that launching a website or an online portal is just the first step towards running a successful online business. The next and most important step involves attracting traffic to the site, maintaining these visitors, and converting the traffic into actual sales. This process involves precise, rigorous and skillful online marketing. Today, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) ranks as the best, cheapest and most natural way to market a website. SEO South Carolina enables a website to attract internet users from such search engines as Google, Bing and Yahoo, by ranking the website high on the organic search results pages returned by these search engines for relevant keywords and phrases.

It is certainly worth appreciating the fact that a good number of South Carolina businesses are now enjoying online success courtesy of quality SEO. Businesses that seek to prosper in the same way must realize that not just any SEO attempt can produce brilliant results. Achieving optimal success with a SEO program is a progressive process rather than a short-term engagement. In this a business must devote substantial resources, effort and time to building and maintaining SEO-rich landing pages replete with adequate outbound and internal links, precisely placed search phrases, and highly targeted content. Oftentimes website owners lack the training, skills, time and determination to create and maintain what is truly a SEO success story. Nonetheless, for those who know the value of SEO-based marketing, the best option is always to outsource the SEO South Carolina program from professional service providers.

What makes a SEO program in Charleston or South Carolina at large successful? How can a successful SEO program be created? The secret is in four steps. To begin with, a successful SEO program begins with a strategic analysis of the target market. Each market niche targeted by a business has specific keywords and phrases that are used by internet users to search for products or services. A detailed strategic analysis will help to identify the most useful keywords and phrases for a business, which can then be optimized for search engines results.

Once the appropriate keywords and phrases are identified, the next step of a successful SEO South Carolina program is meticulous, organized implementation. The website owner needs to contract a team of skilled and experienced copywriters to develop SEO-rich contents precisely targeted at facilitating search engine spiders crawling. The contents must provide valuable information to the site's visitors while also attracting favorable ranking by the search engines. Enriching these contents with backlinks is well advised.

The third stage of the process is tracking the results of the implementation stage. Tracking will enable an online vendor to track the successes or failures of his or her online marketing efforts on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Tracking will also allow the SEO Charleston program to evaluate results and make progressive amends where necessary. The last step of the process involves reporting on the tracking results so that online marketers can take relevant steps towards consolidating their online business success.

Password Recovery, Window Switching, and Holiday Sales

Password Recovery, Window Switching, and Holiday SalesReaders offer their best tips for keeping your passwords secure, switching between open windows, and saving money during holiday sales.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasons?maybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it in?the tip didn't make the front page. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favorites for your buffet-style consumption. Got a tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments, email it to tips at lifehacker.com, or share it on our tips and expert pages.

Password Recovery, Window Switching, and Holiday Sales

Use Aliases for Password Recovery

Ncw96 shares another way to keep your passwords secure:

I saw this article on password security that you just posted and had a similar idea:

You should use an email service with alias support for your password recovery information. These aliases cannot be used as a login address for your email account, so the hacker would not have the necessary info to access your email. This gives you an extra layer of security for your resets.

This method definitely works with Outlook.com accounts and iCloud accounts.

Cycle Through Open Windows of a Certain Program with AutoHotkey

Moon shares another awesome AutoHotkey script:

With Autohotkey's GroupAdd function, you can peruse opened files of a certain type, alt+tab style, without having to cycle through other kinds of files or programs that may also be running.

Here's a script example of what can be done:

GroupAdd, texts, ahk_class Notepad
return

^Numpad1::GroupActivate, texts, r

^Numpad2::
GroupClose, texts , A
return

In the above case, the Ctrl key plus the number 1 on the number pad will run you through all the text files you have open, assuming that Notepad is what you use for editing. If you use something else, such as MetaPad (my fave), then every instance of "Notepad" can be replaced with "metapad". Ultimately the name you use will be determined by the AutoIt3 Windows Info Spy tool that comes with Autohotkey. E.g. the class name for Notepad++ will likely read differently, though I haven't tested with that program? it might present itself as ahk_class Notepad++, or similar.

Any instances of Notepad that you open, whether they're new blank files or ones already in existence, will fall under the group name of "texts". In that way, each instance is added to your cycle-through list automatically. If you have browsers running, a music player, a graphics editor etc, they won't be part of the shuffle, because they're not in the group named texts , and thus won't show up to distract?so long as you use Ctrl+Numpad1 instead of the normal Alt+Tab.

The last three lines are just something I added for convenience. They close the whole group, using Ctrl+Numpad 2.

GroupAdd can do a lot more than this, too. See this link for more information.

Shop Holiday Sales, But Ignore Items That Aren't Marked Down

Thegamefreak0134 shares a simple tip for sale shopping:

I had the pleasure of setting the ads at [popular retail chain] today, and I want to point out a trend: for every item that I put out on sale, there was at least one item that got a silent increase in price. The accessories near the computers on sale were almost always marked up.

This should really surprise no one, as it's a no-brainer for the company to do this to try to stay on top of profits, so it's just buyer beware. The item that's on sale is probably a great deal, just don't negate it by buying all the marked up accessories for it. Shop around and be diligent.

This may not apply to every chain, but it's really repeating the same thing we always say about sales: look for the lowest price you can get at any given time, and you'll always be sure you're getting the best deal. Photo by Memphis CVB.

Use Android's Notification Drawer to Hide Phone Numbers in Screenshots

Dennizvu discovers an easy way to hide personal information:

My Android phone's messaging app shows the phone number in addition to the contact name above the conversation. When I need to screenshot the conversation (for any given reason, lulz on Facebook or something else), I pull down on the notification shade just enough to cover the phone number, and using my other hand, take a screenshot. No need to cut or block out using editing software, and requires very little work.

Cyber Monday Online Sales Could Break Record

(Adds details on eBay, Amazon sales, analyst comments, byline)
By Alistair Barr
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Cyber Monday's online sales got off to a brisk start, sending e-commerce retailers' shares higher and suggesting strong growth from earlier in the holiday shopping season would continue through December.
Sales on eBay Inc's online marketplace were particularly strong and Amazon.com Inc continued its rapid holiday shopping season growth, according to early Cyber Monday data released by e-commerce firm ChannelAdvisor.
EBay's shares climbed about 5 percent to $51.50, a new multi-year high, in afternoon trading. Amazon's shares gained 1 percent to $242.26.
Cyber Monday has been the biggest online shopping day in recent years, as workers return to offices and use computers to make holiday purchases. ComScore expects online sales to hit a record of about $1.5 billion by day's end.
Online sales rose 24.1 percent as of noon EST on Monday, compared with the same period a year ago, according to International Business Machines Corp, which tracks transaction data from 500 U.S. retail websites. In 2011, the early Cyber Monday year-over-year growth was 15 percent, IBM said.
Strong online sales growth on Thanksgiving Day and "Black Friday" sparked concern that shoppers were just buying earlier, threatening revenue later in the season. [ID: nL1E8MO1DY]
"So far that is not the case," said Jay Henderson, the strategy director for IBM Smarter Commerce. "Extending the shopping season has really just fueled additional online spending rather than cannibalizing days later in the season."
ChannelAdvisor said client sales - or sales generated by third-party merchants using the company's software and services - soared 57 percent on eBay.com early on Monday, compared with the same period in 2011.
The sales growth rate was five times higher than during the same period last year, said ChannelAdvisor, which helps merchants sell more online.
"The early eBay numbers are impressive," said R.J. Hottovy, an equity analyst at Morningstar. "They put together an effective marketing plan across several channels this holiday season - online, television and print."
EBay has been trying to move away from its online auction roots, emphasizing new items selling at fixed prices to better compete with Amazon.
"The numbers suggest they're having success reintroducing consumers to the 'new eBay,'" Hottovy said.
Client sales on Amazon.com were up 52 percent during the first part of Cyber Monday, ChannelAdvisor also reported.
"Amazon continues to look impressive to us since it is building on top large numbers," said Scott Tilghman, an analyst at Caris & Company. (Reporting By Alistair Barr; Editing by Maureen Bavdek)

Euro zone, IMF reach deal on cutting long-term Greek debt

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund clinched agreement on a new debt target for Greece on Monday in a breakthrough towards releasing an urgently needed tranche of loans to the near-bankrupt economy, officials said.

After nearly 10 hours of talks at their third meeting on the issue in as many weeks, Greece's international lenders agreed to reduce Greek debt by 40 billion euros, cutting it to 124 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, via a package of steps.

The deal should open the way for a major aid installment needed to recapitalize Greece's teetering banks and enable the government to pay wages, pensions and suppliers in December. Greece could receive up to 44 billion euros, although it remains unclear if the full amount will be paid in one go.

To reduce the debt pile, the ministers agreed to cut the interest rate on loans to Greece and return 11 billion euros to Athens in profits from European Central Bank purchases of Greek government bonds on the secondary market.

They also agreed to help Greece to buy back its own bonds from private investors at an expected cost of around 35 cents in the euro, officials said.

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said on leaving the talks: "I very much welcome the decisions taken by the ministers of finance. They will certainty reduce the uncertainty and strengthen confidence in Europe and in Greece."

Details of the agreement were to be announced at a news conference after the meeting ended.

The euro strengthened against the dollar after news of a deal was reported by Reuters.

"We've filled the financing gap until the end of program in 2014," one official engaged with the talks said. A second official confirmed the figures.

Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras said earlier that Athens had fulfilled its part of the deal by enacting tough austerity measures and economic reforms, and it was now up to the lenders to do their part.

"I'm certain we will find a mutually beneficial solution today," he said on arrival for the marathon talks.

Greece, where the euro zone's debt crisis erupted in late 2009, is the currency area's most heavily indebted country, despite a big "haircut" this year on privately-held bonds. Its economy has shrunk by nearly 25 percent in five years.

Negotiations had been stalled over how Greece's debt, forecast to peak at 190-200 percent of GDP in the coming two years, could be cut to a more sustainable 120 percent by 2020.

The agreed figure fell slightly short of that goal, and the IMF was still insisting that euro zone ministers should make a firm commitment to further steps to reduce the debt stock if Athens implements its adjustment program faithfully.

The key question remains whether Greek debt can become sustainable without euro zone governments having to write off some of the loans they have made to Athens.

A source familiar with IMF thinking said the global lender was demanding immediate measures to cut Greece's debt by 20 percentage points of GDP, with a commitment to do more to reduce the debt stock in a few years if Greece fulfills its program.

To reduce the debt to 124 percent by 2020, the ministers were putting together a package of steps including a debt buyback funded by a euro zone rescue fund, reducing the interest rate on loans and returning euro zone central bank 'profits' to Greece.

Germany and its northern European allies have so far rejected any idea of forgiving official loans to Athens.

DEBT RELIEF "NOT ON TABLE"

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told reporters that a debt cut was legally impossible, not just for Germany but for other euro zone countries, if it was linked to a new guarantee of loans.

"You cannot guarantee something if you're cutting debt at the same time," he said. That did not preclude possible debt relief at a later stage if Greece completed its adjustment program and no longer needs new loans.

The source familiar with IMF thinking said a loan write-off once Greece has established a track record of compliance would be the simplest way to make its debt viable, but other methods such as forgoing interest payments, or lending at below market rates and extending maturities could all help.

The German banking association (BDB) said a fresh "haircut" or forced reduction in the value of Greek sovereign debt, must only happen as a last resort.

Two European Central Bank policymakers, vice-president Vitor Constancio and executive board member Joerg Asmussen, said debt forgiveness was not on the agenda for now.

The ministers agreed to reduce interest on already extended bilateral loans from the current 150 basis points above financing costs to 50 bps once Greece achieves a primary budget surplus of 4.5 percent of GDP.

Another option considered, which could cut Greek debt by almost 17 percent of GDP, was to defer interest payments on loans to Greece from the EFSF, a temporary bailout fund, by 10 years. It was not immediately clear if that had been agreed.

By forgoing profits on its Greek bond portfolio, bought at a deep discount, the ECB could cut the debt pile by a further 4.6 percent by 2020, a document prepared for meeting showed.

Not all euro zone central banks are willing to forgo their profits, however, the German Bundesbank among them.

Before the meetings, officials had spoken of a 10 billion euro buy-back of Greek debt, that would achieve a net reduction of about 20 billion euros in the debt stock, although the potential gain has fallen as prices have risen since the idea was first mooted.

FORGIVING OFFICIAL LOANS?

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could "earn" a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

An opinion poll published on Monday showed Greece's anti-bailout SYRIZA party with a four-percent lead over the Conservatives who won election in June, adding to uncertainty over the future of reforms.

German paper Welt am Sonntag said on Sunday that euro zone ministers were considering a write-down of official loans for Greece from 2015, but gave no sources, and a euro zone official said such an option was never seriously discussed.

IMF wants 40 billion euro cut in Greek debt, more later-source

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund wants euro zone finance ministers to agree to cut Greece's debt by 20 percent of GDP now and commit to further debt reduction in the future to get the country's finances back on a sustainable path, a source familiar with EU-IMF talks said on Monday.

An immediate 20 percentage-point cut, equal to 40 billion euros, could mostly be achieved through lowering interest rates and extending maturities on loans to Greece, the source said.

Finance ministers from the 17 countries sharing the euro, the European Central Bank and the IMF were locked in a third round of talks on Monday to decide how to make Greek debt, expected to rise to 190 percent of GDP next year, more sustainable by reducing it to 120 percent or below by 2020.

The IMF and the ministers are at odds on how to achieve the goal, with the IMF pushing for a bolder reduction of Greek debt through the forgiveness of some of the official loans to Athens which now make up the bulk of the country's obligations.

Greece's biggest creditor, Germany, opposes any debt forgiveness for Athens.

Without additional debt-cutting measures, Greek debt is likely to fall to only 144 percent of GDP in eight years - substantially above the 120 percent target. Many policy-makers see even the 120 percent as too high for Greece, which is in its fifth year of recession and set to contract again in 2013.

The IMF argues, the source said, that if there is no debt reduction up front, the Greek economy will not grow, nobody will invest and Greeks themselves will not spend, derailing other macro-economic assumptions of its adjustment program.

But Germany has said debt forgiveness would be illegal and the European Commission has said that a haircut on the principal lent to Athens is a red line for euro zone ministers.

The key to a compromise may be in keeping the principal intact.

One idea discussed by ministers is to keep the principal untouched but lower the interest on the official loans, either extended bilaterally or through the temporary bailout fund EFSF, to below market rates, and to extend maturities.

This could produce a reduction in debt big enough to make Greek debt sustainable, or close to sustainable.

Other available options include the European Central Bank forgoing profits on its Greek bond portfolio, a 10-year moratorium on debt servicing and a buy-back of privately held debt at a deep discount.

The source said the IMF insisted on a package of steps that would slash 20 percent of GDP off the debt pile up front to give the plan credibility and the Greek economy a chance to grow.

But it also expected the euro zone to promise a further reduction to a level well below 120 percent of GDP at some point in the future as a reward for keeping Greek reforms on track, the source said. That would have to involve debt forgiveness.

The IMF had made clear that it would not walk away from Greece, the source said, but also that it would not endorse a debt reduction deal that did not guarantee debt sustainability.

The IMF insists that any measures the ministers agree on, as well as assumptions in the Greek reform program, have to be credible enough for investors to see them as realistic, otherwise Greece would not be able to return to markets.

Gastric bypass surgery helps diabetes but doesn't cure it, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? After gastric bypass surgery, diabetes goes away for some people -- often even before they lose much weight. So does that mean gastric surgery "cures" diabetes? Not necessarily, according to the largest community-based study of long-term diabetes outcomes after bariatric surgery. For most people in the study, e-published in advance of print in Obesity Surgery, diabetes either never remitted after gastric surgery or relapsed within five years.

Among the two thirds of the study's patients whose diabetes at first went away, more than a third re-developed diabetes again within five years after gastric surgery. After adding in the one quarter of patients whose diabetes never remitted after surgery, most (56 percent) of the study's patients had no long-lasting remission of their diabetes following gastric surgery. However, when diabetes did go away, the research team extrapolated, it stayed away for a median of eight years.

Which kinds of obese people with type 2 diabetes are likely to get the most benefit from gastric surgery? "Our results suggest that, after gastric surgery, diabetes stays away for longer in those people whose diabetes was less severe and at an earlier stage at the time of surgery," said principal investigator David E. Arterburn, MD, MPH, a general internist and associate investigator at Group Health Research Institute. "Gastric surgery isn't for everyone," he said. "But this evidence suggests that, once you have diabetes and are severely obese, you should strongly consider it, even though it doesn't seem to be a cure for most patients."

The multi-site study tracked 4,434 adults at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Kaiser Permanente Southern California, and HealthPartners for 14 years: from 1995 to 2008. The research arms of all three of these integrated health care delivery systems -- and Group Health Research Institute, where the study's results were analyzed -- belong to the HMO Research Network. The patients had type 2 diabetes that was either controlled with medication or else uncontrolled, and they were also obese enough to be candidates for gastric bypass surgery.

"Diabetes is an increasingly common disease that tends to keep getting worse relentlessly," Dr. Arterburn said. More than 25 million American adults have diabetes -- and as populations age and keep gaining weight, 50 million are predicted to have it by 2050. Already, diabetes accounts for 5 percent of all U.S. health care spending. And it raises the risk of blindness, kidney disease, heart attacks, strokes, and deaths.

"Prevention is by far the best medicine for diabetes," Dr. Arterburn said. "Once you have diabetes, it's really hard to get rid of. Attempts to treat it with intensive lifestyle changes and medical management have been disappointing." For instance, the National Institutes of Health recently halted the Look AHEAD study of intensive lifestyle changes for people with diabetes. Despite improvements in risk factors like body weight, fitness, and blood pressure, sugar, and lipids, that study showed lifestyle changes did not lower the outcomes that matter most: heart attacks, strokes, and deaths.

"No wonder so many were excited to learn that diabetes can remit after gastric surgery -- even, in some cases, before any significant weight loss -- and many were hoping that gastric surgery might be a 'cure' for diabetes," Dr. Arterburn said. "Our study is the first major evidence that diabetes often recurs after gastric bypass surgery." Still, he added, even after diabetes comes back, having had a long period of post-surgery remission is likely to have many positive effects, such as fewer complications of diabetes: less damage to eyes and kidneys, and fewer heart attacks, strokes, and deaths. The researchers are now funded by the National Institutes of Health to study that possibility in this same population. Dr. Arterburn is also leading a randomized controlled pilot trial of intensive behavioral treatment vs. gastric surgery at Group Health with colleagues from the University of Washington.

It's still not clear whether diabetes relapse happens because of gaining weight back or because of underlying the progression of diabetes. But patients' weight -- before and after surgery -- was not strongly correlated with remission or relapse of diabetes in this population.

As part of the Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions about Effectiveness (DEcIDE) program, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services funded this project under contract HHSA290-2005-0033-I-TO10-WA1, led by Dr. Arterburn.

Engineering plants for biofuels

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? With increasing demands for sustainable energy, being able to cost-efficiently produce biofuels from plant biomass is more important than ever. However, lignin and hemicelluloses present in certain plants mean that they cannot be easily converted into biofuels. A study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Biotechnology for Biofuels appears to have solved this problem, using gene manipulation techniques to engineer plants that can be more easily broken down into biofuels.

Plants high in lignin and hemicelluloses -- lignocellulosic biomass -- have a high content of pentose sugars that are more difficult to ferment into fuels than plants with hexose sugars. In order to be useful for biofuel production, scientists need to be able to engineer plants with smaller amounts of xylan -- the major non-cellulosic polysaccharide -- present in secondary cell walls.

With this in mind, a research group from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA, used 3 mutant strains of Arabidopsis deficient in xylan -- irregular xylem (irx) mutants irx7, irx8 and irx9 -- in order to engineer plants with low xylan content and improved properties for easier breakdown of carbohydrate into simple sugars (saccharification). The irx mutants normally exhibit severe dwarf phenotypes that result from xylem vessel collapse and consequent impaired transport of water and nutrients. The team hypothesized that restoring xylan biosynthesis in the plants would complement the mutations.

To reintroduce xylan biosynthesis into the xylem of irx7, 8 and 9, Henrik Scheller and colleagues manipulated the promoter regions of vessel-specific VND6 and VND7 transcription factor genes. Significantly, they found that the ensuing phenotypes completely restored wild-type growth patterns in some cases, resulting in stronger plants with restored mechanical properties, whilst at the same time maintaining a low overall xylan content and improved saccharification properties that allowed for better breakdown into biofuels.

Plants with up to 23% reduction in xylose levels and 18% reduction in lignin content were obtained, whilst normal xylem function was restored. The plants also showed a 42% increase in saccharification yield after pretreatment.

Lead author Scheller said, "These results show that it is possible to obtain plants that have reduced amounts of xylan in their walls while still preserving the structural integrity of the xylem vessels. The xylan engineering system we present here is a great step towards tailored bioenergy crops that can be easily converted into biofuels. He continued, "This approach in Arabidopsis has the potential to be transferred to other biofuel crop species in the near future, in particular, the poplar species."

These results from this study provide hope that a viable alternative to fossil fuels may soon be available.

Peyton's 2 TDs lead Broncos to 6th straight win

By DAVE SKRETTA

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Peyton Manning was wooed by the Chiefs early in the offseason, after the four-time MVP had been cut loose by Indianapolis and before he signed a five-year deal with Denver.

On Sunday, he showed exactly why Kansas City was after him.

Manning threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns, and led the Broncos down the field in the final minutes when the Chiefs were frantically trying to get a stop, setting up a field goal that sealed a 17-9 victory and their sixth consecutive win.

It allowed Manning to break a tie with his boss and Broncos vice president John Elway with his 149th win as a starting quarterback, trailing only Brett Favre (186) for most in NFL history.

"Peyton Manning is a Hall of Famer," Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson said. "We played pretty good as a defense most of the game, but he made a few plays, one or two more plays than we'd like him to make, and he came up with a victory."

Naturally, Manning was quick to pass the praise to someone else.

In this case, it was Knowshon Moreno, who stepped into the starting lineup after Willis McGahee landed on injured reserve this week and ran for 85 yards. Manning also handed out kudos to Jacob Tamme and Demaryius Thomas, who were on the receiving end of his touchdown throws.

"I've got to tip my hat to Knowshon Moreno," Manning said. "He stepped up today and did a heck of a job. Really an impressive effort by him."

Not so much by the Chiefs offense.

Jamaal Charles ran for 107 yards, but the Chiefs (1-10) were done in by penalties, missed opportunities and a conservative approach that has not yielded a touchdown since the first quarter against Pittsburgh on Nov. 12, a span of more than 11 quarters and 173 minutes.

They could only manage field goals by Ryan Succop for the second straight game.

"It's really about stopping the run," Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said. "If you can limit that run game, you put the weight on their passing game, which hasn't been that great this year."

Quinn was 13 of 25 for 126 yards and an interception.

"Hats off to our defense," Broncos coach John Fox said. "We struggled a bit against the run, but they're a very good run team. ... Something we work very hard on is the red area, and holding them to three field goals was a key in the game."

Kansas City actually established an early lead for the third straight game on Succop's first-quarter field goal, and seemed to be outplaying Denver (8-3) the entire first half.

They had a chance to go ahead 10-0 when they faced fourth-and-2 at the Denver 4, but Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel elected to kick another field goal against a team that had scored at least 30 points in five straight games, drawing a chorus of boos from the crowd.

"I thought points on the board were important," Crennel said by way of explanation.

Problem was that touchdowns trump field goals.

On the Broncos' final drive of the half, Manning completed five straight passes before finding Tamme on third-and-goal from the Kansas City 7 with 18 seconds left. The touchdown catch, on which the tight end dragged safety Eric Berry into the end zone, gave the Broncos a 7-6 lead and wiped out all the hard work that Kansas City had put in over the first 25 minutes.

Denver's Matt Prater missed his second field goal try of the game early in the third quarter, and Succop's 49-yarder gave Kansas City its first second-half lead of the season.

But once again, a failure to get into the end zone proved fatal.

Manning, who surpassed 3,000 yards passing earlier in the day, rode the legs of Moreno into Chiefs territory, and that's when he lobbed a pass over nickelback Jalil Brown and into the hands of Thomas for the go-ahead, 30-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter.

"That was a great catch down the sideline against tight coverage," Manning said.

The Chiefs twice had chances to overcome the 14-9 deficit late in the fourth, but they failed to move the ball after taking over at their own 37. After getting it back, Crennel chose to punt on fourth-and-6 at the Broncos 47 after a series of penalties ruined the drive.

It was their last chance to retake the lead.

Denver tacked on a field goal by Prater in the closing seconds, and after Jacksonville held on to beat Tennessee, the Chiefs were left as the league's only one-win team.

"We're frustrated every week. Every time we get a loss, it's frustrating," Charles said. "I don't know when it's going to stop, but hopefully we can did deep down in our souls and find a way to get out of this."

NOTES: Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster (head/neck) and S Kendrick Lewis (shoulder) left the game with injuries. ... Kansas City was 3 for 14 on third downs. ... Chiefs LB Justin Houston had two sacks. ... Broncos LB Von Miller had his 14th sack of the season.

It wouldn?t be far-fetched to compare the three touring bands on Friday night?s TLA bill to members of a family. The quasi-dysfunctional, generally loving kind one might have seen eating Thanksgiving dinner the day before.

Los Angeles-based garage punk opener FIDLAR ripped through its set like an angsty, intoxicated teenager. Two-piece hazy rock outfit JEFF The Brotherhood, like a token stoner 20-something, took the stage to a cloud of smoke and played multiple tracks from their summer release, ?Hypnotic Nights.?

Then, to a mass of colorful lights and a wall of reverb, headliners Delta Spirit invited the audience on to what felt like a rock-and-roll UFO. In the family mix, the band would be that weird uncle, heartbroken and laden with the scars of life, who always put on the best records and had the best stories to tell.

Forming in 2005 but gaining recognition most recently with the March release of their self-titled third album, Delta Spirit exuded the perfect blend of energy and experience. Frontman Matthew Vasquez rarely seemed in control of his extremities as his feet stomped and arms flailed throughout the set, but he had no problem thrusting the mic stand above the crowd for a rowdy sing-along during ?Tear It Up.?

Still capitalizing on their alt-country and other eclectic attributes, Delta Spirit also delved deep into their discography. Highlights included multi-instrumentalist Kelly Winrich bringing that shiny tin lid front-and-center for ?Trashcan? and the crowd response for old favorites like ?People C?mon.?

Doing everything from head banging to swing dancing, the large TLA crowd was no indication that rival touring act Sufjan Stevens was playing a sold-out Union Transfer the same night. Just as the acts before them, Delta Spirit thanked Philadelphia for their attention and support before finishing up with popular arena-ready single ?California.?

It was a fine night to feel like one, big, happy family.

New York Theatre - Entertainment - Interviews - Actors - Actresses ...

There's a new composer on the rise and his name is Will Reynolds! I had first seen Will in NYMF's Baby Case?this past summer and was very taken by his performance and on November 11, 2012, I was introduced to Will Reynolds the composer in Libra Theater's presentation of Poems and Moon Songs: The Music of Will Reynolds at the Underground Lounge in NYC.

Will's style of music is very unique because he takes poems and sets them to music in addition to writing his own original songs. I was blown away by the humor, heart, and sophistication Will put into his lyrics and music. Will has a natural knack for telling stories of love and loss through song, some consisting of a comedic nature.?A terrific cast of talent was put together for this wonderful evening of music:?Sara Jean Ford, Marissa McGowan, Jeremy Morse, and Zachary Prince hit all the right notes throughout the evening.

My favorite songs of the night were "Heartsong" sung by the whole cast (based upon the poem by Mattie Stepanek), "Can't Fall Asleep" sung by Marissa, "Heart, We Will Forget Him" sung by Sara/Marissa, "Hope" sung by Zachary, (both songs based upon poems by Emily Dickinson), "Si Vous Me Suivez" sung by Jeremy, and "Winter, Wait for Me" and "Spring" sung by Sara. All of these songs struck a chord with me because they reflected the many moods of love/loss I have experienced. I also particularly liked how the songs were sung with big voices, control, and lots of love and enthusiasm!

I'm thrilled to have been able to part of this evening. In addition to seeing some great new talent and experiencing Will's music for the first time, profits from the evening went to Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, for Hurricane Sandy relief.?

Will's music and style is definitely going to bring a new dimension to whatever medium he uses it in (here's hoping it's theatre).?

If you weren't able to be part of this special evening, there is another chance to hear Will's music...this Monday, November 26 at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center (111 Amsterdam Avenue and 65th Street)?from 6:00pm to 7:30pm as part of "Broadway's Future Songbook. FOR FREE, you'll get to see excellent talent along with one of NYC's newest rising composers, Will Reynolds!

Against the odds, Syrian rebels begin to chip away at regime's air advantage

Even without the anti-aircraft weapons, the Syrian rebels have managed to deal some blows to the regime's air force, using heavy machine guns and careful planning.

Syrian opposition fighters have long decried their lack of anti-aircraft weapons and called on the international community to arm them with something that can counter the the Syrian regime's military?s jets and helicopters. Such support has yet to come ? and there are few indicators that it will arrive anytime soon.

Still, those in the Free Syrian Army fighting for control of Aleppo province say that they?re making some progress in the battle for the skies. Using truck-mounted, DShK heavy machine guns, more commonly referred to as dushkas, FSA fighters say that they?ve managed to establish anti-air defenses capable of challenging jets.

Dushkas are one of the more difficult weapons for FSA fighters to acquire and in almost all cases must be captured from the regime forces or brought over by defectors. The anti-air defense network has grown slowly over the last several months, but many now say it?s reached a point where?it can effectively challenge airplanes and helicopters.

?We control 70 percent of the sky, because if you compare the situation now to two months ago there are a lot less airplanes,? says Khlief Abu Allah, a dushka gunner who worked in an anti-aircraft unit in the Syrian Army during his obligatory military service before the revolution started.?

While airstrikes remain a major threat in Aleppo, residents and FSA fighters say there's been a noticeable drop in the number of attacks in recent weeks.?

Working with what they have

The dushka?trucks prowl the city, as their drivers listen for jets overhead. When they hear one, they follow, in an effort to predict where and when it will attack so they can find a position from which to fire at it in hopes of shooting it down, or at least stopping it from attacking.?

?We depend on our ears to find the planes,? says Basim Abu Ahmad, who drives one of the dushka trucks. He says he was selected to drive the truck because he knows how to drive aggressively after smuggling duty-free cigarettes before the revolution.

Opposition fighters? claims of progress against the regime air force are slightly dubious and difficult to prove. Though there appear to be less airstrikes over the city of Aleppo now, it?s difficult to find any evidence that rebels have shot down planes. There is some speculation that those jets that have been downed recently could have also suffered mechanical failures. Other issues, such as defected mechanics and ground crews, could be part of the apparent drop in military activity over Aleppo.

Even with such defenses, the city is still susceptible to devastating airstrikes. On Nov. 21, a jet reportedly attacked one of Aleppo?s central hospitals, leveling the adjacent building and killing at least 40 people.

As with all rebel weapons, ammunition shortages remain a major challenge for dushka teams: They can only fire at the jets in short bursts, making the chances of hitting the plane much less likely.?

?We?re almost out of dushka ammunition. The only way to get dushka ammunition is from capturing it from the Assad Army,? says Omar Abu Ibrahim, who mans a dushka in Aleppo.?

Capt. Adel Asaf, a pilot who defected from the air force about five months ago and now commands an FSA unit in Aleppo says that creating an effective anti-air defense system remains incredibly difficult using only dushkas. An ideal setup would require a coordinated system of multiple dushkas, and even then it would only have about a 60 percent chance of successfully downing a jet.

Even without such methodical setups, Captain Asaf says placing dushkas throughout the city has taken away the planes ability to circle low over the city for hours at a time and conduct multiple attacks.

?If I was still a pilot I would be worried and I think I could only complete about 30 percent of my mission,? he says. ?It depends on the psychological strength of the pilot.?
