In Diverse Workplaces, Whites Struggle With... | Gather

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. For Beth Nelson, the watershed point came last month when new hires at Economatrix, her employer, pushed the Caucasian share of the consulting firm's workforce below 50% for the first time.

"If you can bring your dog in, I'm bringin' mine."

?

"People came in on Monday and said the office smelled like a wet dog," she says, recalling her mortification. "It was then that I realized that I'd become a minority."

"I know we're all on the same team, but who's using the Golden Retriever deodorant?"

?

Nelson is an early warning sign that the borderline in America that demarcates whether an individual's personal, unenhanced fragrance is considered "normal" has moved from a white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant standard to something more complex. "It's a well-settled fact among olfactory ethnographers that white people smell like wet dogs," says Allen Reynolds, a professor at Case Western Reserve. "The old standard was a mixture of mashed potatoes and Christmas tree highlights on a solid foundation of wet dog smell, usually a golden lab or cocker spaniel."

Jack Russell terrier: The WASP pit bull.

?

"Like many prejudices, this particular belief contains a grain of truth, however invidious and noxious," says Arnold Pehayek, a fragrance specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau who recently finished reading "Thirty Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary." "Upper-class white people smell like dogs favored by the affluent, such as black labrador retrievers and Jack Russell terriers. The odor is caused by the natural fibers they wear--the people, not the dogs--and by their participation in privileged outdoor activities such as field hockey and lacrosse." He noted that the phenomenon was especially pronounced among graduates of small liberal arts colleges.

"Hmm--springer spaniel?"

?
Nelson's co-workers, who eventually were forced to complain to human resources about her, said they were merely being objective, not racist. "Wet dog smell is a good thing," said DeShawn Johnson, a research assistant. "I told her the old joke, how do you spot the bride at a WASP wedding? She's the one kissing the golden retriever," he says to scattered laughter and a few groans. "That showed we were laughing with Beth, not at her."

Why is there no gold medal in tetherball?

?The London Olympics are showing how years upon years of disciplined practice by serious athletes can result in incredible?performances, worldwide acclaim, and a possible gold medal.

Catherine Ledner / Getty Images stock

Tetherball has rules? Who knew?

The rest of us, sitting at home watching from our couches? We may not have that fame and fortune, or memories of getting up at 4 a.m. to walk a balance beam with a crabby Romanian coach, but often we can look back on our own memories of sports or games that we played as kids.

So as a tribute to all the non-Olympians out there, who deserve their own gold medals in card playing, kickball or jump rope, here are some of our memories. Could you have medaled in any of these sports?

Kickball
Boston had its Green Monster, but during the summer of 1976, we kids of North Owasso Boulevard in Shoreview, Minn. had an equally threatening outfield: Lake Wabasso. Every night that summer of America?s Bicentennial we played kickball in my cousins? yard. If you could only manage to thump the red dimpled ball past the outfielders, you were pretty much golden. It was going to roll into the cattails and marshy lake edge and your outfielder was going to have to wade into?and pick their way?through the shallows to retrieve the ball, all the while you zoomed around the bases like our Olympic hero of that summer, Bruce Jenner. Kickball was democratic ?- we girls had as good a shot as our big brothers and neighbors to nail a solid kick or catch a popped-up?ball ? and it was simple, everyone knew the rules.? In those pre-Internet distraction days, I sank into the game, never even looking up until the sun went down or my dad showed up to walk me back across the busy street to our house. By the next summer, we had moved, and my kickball days were over. But only last month, on a walk by my Seattle home, I stumbled upon an adult kickball league that eagerly announced they?re looking for more players. But there?s no lake in their outfield, so my strategy would have to change dramatically.??? ?Gael Fashingbauer Cooper?

Tetherball
I must have been about 7 years old when I first realized that tetherball might just be the perfect summer activity. For a not-so-athletically inclined kid who wasn?t about to play kickball in the unrelenting Florida heat or climb up on?branding-iron-hot monkey bars, this simple ball-tied-to-a-pole game -- ideally situated beneath a shady, live oak canopy -- held plenty of appeal. The rules were simple enough: While holding an ice-cold drink in one hand, slap the ball toward your opponent. If you?re lucky, the orb will either bean the other player, or it?ll sail right past and swoop around the pole. If you?re not so lucky, your opponent will land one of those sweet shots instead. Also, you should both shout something ridiculous at each other with every turn. (My pal and I favored the classic ?Looney Tunes? battle cries of ?Duck season!? vs. ?Rabbit season!? for no particular reason.) I?ve since learned those aren?t the real rules?for tetherball, but?they?re the ones I still follow today. But take heed! One epic?face off?in the ?90s left my?BFF with a torn rotator cuff.?Fortunately, my own injuries?were limited to the tetherball standards: a?beet-red hand, a sore throat and a spilled drink.???? --Ree Hines

Bodysurfing can be a blast for the surfers, but nerve-wracking for the surfers' parents.

Bodysurfing
While most of my?time was otherwise devoted to such highbrow pursuits as comic-book-collecting, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and the finer points of the KISS discography, my summers in the late 1970s as a tween were largely ruled by one mighty force: the ocean. Flanked by a gaggle of friends out in Quogue, Long Island from early June to late August, I spent hours goofing around in the sprawling surf of the Atlantic Ocean, getting mercilessly tumbled and forever hoping for that perfect wave that would give?me the ride of?my short, frivolous life. Regardless of red flags, low temperatures, jellyfish, the threat of rip currents or even the ominous strains of the theme from ?Jaws,? we?d happily go charging into the water every day, the rougher the surf the better. Even after a few terrifying waves gave me a couple of vigorous saltwater beat-downs, it seemed I?d never learn my lesson.? Now, decades later, I stand on the very same shoreline and watch as my own children giddily start to explore the timeless joys of the ocean, quietly dreading the day they?ll discover their own love for the cresting wave and hoping they?ll be more responsible than their old man.???? --Alex Smith

Card playing
As the 1980 reigning Spit Champeen of Bar-T-Ranch camp in Gaithersburg, Md., I want to trumpet the endless summer pleasures of ? card-playing. Sure, camp was great: We had horseback riding, swimming twice a day, Grape Nehi in bottles, Nuke-Em volleyball, Go-Karts. But between waiting for activities to begin and just general lazy free time, we dealt in cards. Crazy 8s, Slap Jack, War, Go Fish (if extremely bored), Pig, and the one game I simply could not be beat at: Spit. (Others of you may know it as Speed, but let?s face it ? kids prefer something gross-sounding.) It?s a fast-moving game, a round always drawing a crowd. And as an uncoordinated 10-year-old, I relished the idea of being No. 1 at something. Except: I wasn?t, not always ? my friend Beth Burns and I would face off regularly at Spit, and almost like clockwork, trade off the winner?s spot. So it also taught me to share, because Beth was awesome. Just like Spit. Lay your cards down now!???? --Randee Dawn

Marty Wolk

Marty Wolk and brothers, including Scott Wolk, shown, took Wiffle ball very seriously in the 1970s.

Wiffle ball
Our?suburban Cleveland backyard?was home to hundreds of Wiffle ball games in the 1970s.?The rules were detailed and arcane, and arguments over close plays could be heard clearly three houses away. Everyone had to turn around to hit lefthanded, supposedly as a handicap, since the park favored right-handed hitters. But the genius of the game was one simple rule: Hit it into the hedges, you're out. Over the hedges, and it's a home run. In high summer, the bushy hedges soared over 10 feet high and the giant maple trees drooped down, heavy with leaves, leaving only a small gap to shoot for in center field. But the thrill of lining one out on a warm summer afternoon, driving in three invisible runners to beat your brother -- that is a summer memory that is hard to top.??? --Martin Wolk

Bike riding
When I was a kid, summers were a time of unimaginable freedom. No school. No TV limits. No organized activities. Under the clear blue California sky, with nothing to limit me but my own imagination, I was free to roam the neighborhood on my pink Huffy bike. I filled my days riding to friends? homes, to the park, and when I was a little older, to the local 7-Eleven or Thrifty Drug Store for ice cream. I perfected tricks such as ?no hands? riding and jumping off curbs. I would ride out past the abandoned golf course and down the unfinished street with the S-shaped sidewalk. The world was mine to explore. Eventually I would return home for dinner, but afterwards I would head out again into the late summer evening, with a promise to be home before the streetlights came on.???--Joy Jernigan

Manchester United fans group slams Glazers' IPO plan

LONDON (Reuters) - A group of Manchester United fans accused the American Glazer family of milking the English Premier League soccer team for cash after IPO terms revealed they planned to take half of the proceeds of its flotation.

Fans from the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) questioned why all of the money being raised was not being used to reduce a debt pile that they say is holding back the team's performances on the field.

The club and the Glazers each will be selling half the IPO shares in an offering that will raise as much as $333 million. The club's proceeds from the IPO will be used to reduce its debt of 423 million pounds as of March 31 to 345.4 million pounds ($664 million to $543 million).

"Supporters are going to be very angry about this," said Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of MUST, a group lobbying for fans to play a greater role in the ownership of the club.

"The Glazers have already cost United more than 550 million pounds in debt related fees and now another slap in the face as they help themselves to half of the proposed IPO proceeds," he added.

"Clearly this has nothing to do with benefits for Manchester United and is all about giving the Glazers quick access to desperately needed cash at the expense of our football club."

MUST has fought a long campaign against the Glazers, who bought the club for 790 million pounds in a highly-leveraged deal in 2005 and also own NFL team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Discontent has grown after United, English champions a record 19 times, failed to win a trophy last season - their first barren year since 2005.

They missed out on the title to local rivals Manchester City, whose owner Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, one of Abu Dhabi's ruling family, has ploughed an estimated 800 million pounds into the club.

A recent survey commissioned by United said it had 659 million followers globally, almost one in 10 of the population, but it still remains at the mercy of performances on the pitch, with revenues hit last season by an early exit from the lucrative European Champions' League.

However, the club's global appeal was underlined when it signed a new seven-year shirt sponsorship deal with General Motors' Chevrolet. The deal begins in 2014 and one source said it could be worth up to $600 million.

Risk & Business: Business insurance Becoming More Risk - blog*spot

Business insurance has always had the focus on price and product. Anyone who has had to pay for the high cost of business insurance every year had no choice but to focus on these two items. Change is occurring however. Technology has made business insurance products and price very similiar between companies but risk management services are now becoming the defining feature. The trouble that insurance companies are having however is they cannot do a solid job at it. In other words business owners are getting "risk management light" because the insurance company business model just does not have the expense covered in their margins. Enter the insurance broker, who insurance companies are looking at to cover these services. Brokers ,like the insurance companies are trying to find a way to pay for giving risk services to clients. So how is something so important in today's business climate going to get accomplished when there is no money set aside to do it. My thought is companies, brokers, and business owners will find the money as the demands of business make the pain of not having good risk management programs inevitable. Until next time be careful out there and know your risks.

Speed Reading Improves Comprehension - blog*spot

Some people find that they cannot pay attention and have a tendency to daydream when they have gone through three or four pages without remembering a word. One cure for this is to stop reading and deliberately seek some distraction, then return to what you were reading with renewed attention. Get up and walk around, get a coffee, draw a picture, count your pocket change - anything. Then pick up the document again and take up from where you left off. No-one can tell you exactly what to do if your mind wanders when you read, because to some degree this problem is an individual one which you must work out for yourself. The important thing is to do something about it, not just tell yourself, as so many people do: "I can't concentrate".

Perhaps the best general advice is: Do not mix play and work. When it is time to work, work hard. Apply yourself to your task and keep going as long as you can give the job full attention. You should be able to read for at least an hour or two without interruption. When you begin to feel that you are not getting as much out of your reading as you ought to, rest for a while. But if there is more work remaining to be done, make the rest period short. It is surprising how quickly you can refresh your mind by turning to something entirely different for a few minutes. It does not take long to get your mind out of a rut, and when you return to the report or book, you will be alert and ready to go at it with a mind refreshed.

What is critical is your reading speed however. If you read too slowly you give your brain the chance to wander on to something more interesting - especially if what you are reading is boring! So learning to read fast with effective levels of concentration and comprehension is a far better use of time than wandering along at a slow reading speed, allowing all sorts of other thoughts to distract you.

If this suggestion does not solve your problem, there is another thing you can do. Form the habit of reading in the same place each time you read. Make this place, wherever it may be, in the office or at the desk in your study, a place for "concentrated" reading. Write your reports and fill out your crossword puzzles somewhere else. After you have tried this for a week or two, you will find that your habits will begin to work for you, which does not mean of course, that they will take over the whole process. There is still the matter of will power.

Crockpot pulled pork ? Crafting and Cooking

I love pulled pork. If I see it on a menu, I will usually make that my lunch or dinner. This is the easiest and most flavorful pulled pork recipe I?ve made. I got the recipe from a friend a few years back and tweaked it to my specifications.

Pulled pork?s been in the crockpot for about 5 hours.

Ingredients:
Pork tenderloin, about 2-4 pounds
2 bottles of Zesty Italian dressing (I use Kraft)
2 bottles of BBQ sauce (I use the original Sweet Baby Ray?s)

Chop up the tenderloins into a couple of chunks each and throw them into the crockpot with the bottles of Italian dressing. Cook on high for 5-6 hours. When it?s done, strain out the dressing and shred the pork with two forks. Then mix with the BBQ sauce and eat.

Mix the pulled pork with your favorite BBQ sauce.

The dressing flavors the meat perfectly since it has all that seasoning. And it breaks down the meat quickly. Starting at about 4 hours, I start stirring it once in awhile. You?ll see the pork starting to fall apart too. You could always serve this with the BBQ sauce on the side. I love drowning the pork in BBQ sauce, but some people like their pulled pork less saucy. Eat it on a burger bun or kaiser roll or just by itself. You have plenty of options!

Serve!

Also, I believe this can be used for pulled chicken. You?ll probably need to adjust the cooking time slightly and then use less dressing.

3 shot dead in Pa.; girl taken, found safe in Ohio

QUINCY, Pa. (AP) ? A man in south-central Pennsylvania confronting his wife about custody arrangements for their daughter shot to death three people, then fled with the 4-year-old girl before the two were found about 250 miles away in Ohio, authorities said Saturday.

Kevin Matthew Cleeves was trying to contact his wife Friday to make arrangements to pick up his daughter Leia, but his wife didn't answer the phone, so he went to a home in Quincy Township, the (Waynesboro) Record-Herald reported, citing court records.

Police said Cleeves, 35, found a woman and a man sitting in a car and began arguing with them, then was ordered to leave. He then shot to death both of them as well as another woman and took the girl, authorities alleged.

An Amber Alert was issued Friday night but was canceled hours later, on Saturday, after the pair were found in Austintown in northeastern Ohio, outside Youngstown. Police said the child was unharmed and Cleeves was arrested without incident.

"His 4-year-old daughter was located in the vehicle and was unharmed," police said in a statement.

Austintown police said the vehicle had been spotted in a hotel parking lot off Interstate 80 and was later stopped in the parking lot of the Weston Plaza on Route 46, where Cleeves was arrested.

Cleeves was charged with three counts of criminal homicide Saturday in the deaths in Quincy Township, Pa., according to online court records. In the Amber Alert, authorities had said that Cleeves should be considered "armed and dangerous as well as suicidal."

Pennsylvania Trooper Adam Reed would not disclose the names of the three victims. He said more information about the deaths and their relationship to Cleeves would be released later. Court records did not list an attorney for Cleeves.

A detective with the Austintown Township police department in Ohio told The (Chambersburg) Public Opinion that Cleeves was in jail awaiting an extradition hearing, scheduled for Monday.

Golf Base ? Answers Archive ? Search Marketing Professional ...

Whether it truly is for the web-site or for the online business, online marketing as well as Search engine optimization is often critical. In fact, setting an online business might be utterly useless if it isn?t marketed properly to ensure that it can attract its target visitors. Furthermore, no business or web-site will survive in the tough market for so long if they have no clients. Consequently, if a business or perhaps a web site desires to attract more site visitors and gain income, then they would must contemplate search engine optimization services .
?
Why Is It Certainly Required?
?
Google, Bing, Yahoo and any other search engines will rank internet websites based on the altering algorithm that will measure the capability of a particular web-site to give the most effective information and ease of use to their users. If a website or an online business will have a better rank, then it is doable that people who produced the query will readily locate them in search engine outcomes. The more users that can view their web-sites from search engine outcomes, the more chances in generating revenue for their business.
?
So How Exactly Does Optimization Work?
?
Basically the process of optimisation operates in two significant techniques. The first thing SEOs will do is that they are going to make a complete analysis of the web site. These services will analyze the HTML code of the website, its overall design as well as any problem that will prevent the website from being listed correctly in search engines. After analyzing these details, SEOs will do their best to improve the website by improving the appearance, the design as well as its application. Web page owners or operators may also pick to have added features for their web-site to strengthen its rankings ? new capabilities like video streams or getting social media optimization.
?
The second process is all about registering the web-site ? making it recognized to search engines. In order to accomplish this, SEOs will have to use the proper keywords that will be necessary to obtain a prominent position in search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing. It begins with the proper research of the possible keywords that would help boost the rankings of a website. Then they will incorporate it in the content, title and others. At the identical time, these key phrases will likely be added in the domain name with the web-site.
?
Regardless of whether it truly is for online marketing or for making an online presence, a web-site will usually be not sufficient. Today, it would be strange and bad if organizations will not take advantage of the Internet, specially considering that the Internet is known as one of the most powerful tools in promoting organizations. Though there may be other marketing techniques like email marketing, it would be better to invest in Search engine optimization services.

This matter is beautifully outlined in here: contextual link building service. Nevertheless, if you don?t have much time for you to read, you can just click this alternatively: SEO firm Philippines.

Sony Tablet S Analysis: The Gamer's Choice?

Gamers are a unique bunch. ...okay, maybe they're not exactly unique, but they like it when other digital products cater to their tastes.

Take the Sony Tablet S, for instance, marketed towards gamers as being the only PlayStation-certified tablet available. And indeed, the slick unit features access to the PlayStation Store, which is a big bonus, especially because you can always add to the admittedly bare selection.

So how's about the rest? Is this a tablet gamers are going to want? Please bear in mind that for the purposes of this analysis, I compared the tablet to other popular tablets, such as my brother's iPad 2.

Aesthetic Appeal

Let's start with the look and feel of the Tablet S: This really is one of the most comfortable tablets to hold, which I think is critical considering that I still view these things as portable devices (forget the damn cradles). It's comfortable with one or two hands, the nicely textured surface is conducive to a good grip, and it achieves this level of comfort without much of a fuss. The design is really sort of understated, really.

Screen and Visual

As for the display, you'll be looking at a 9.4" screen that features fantastic depth of color. The 1280 x 800 resolution is clear and sharp, and it actually looks pretty good from off to the side, too (you don't necessarily have to have it directly in front of you to appreciate the visual quality). When you check out some top-notch games, movies, and videos, you'll be all the more impressed with the overall picture.

That being said, the screen's functionality isn't too great. The screen just isn't very slick and actually feels sticky; even my Samsung Stratosphere 4G LTE feels much smoother. If you've got any moisture on your fingers at all, the Galaxy S screen proves problematic, and even extra cold or clammy fingers can cause issues. I'm not saying you can't use the screen effectively; I'm merely comparing it to other screens I've used. The iPad 2 screen, for instance, is super slick and extremely responsive.

Hardware and Apps

Moving on to hardware, I'm not a huge tech person but I did some research here- the Sony's Tablet S started by running Android 3.2.1 but thankfully, it has since upgraded to Android 4.0, which it definitely needed. Overall, in regards to basic mechanics, it still isn't the fastest tablet available, as it doesn't have the silky smooth transition between screens. There's always this very minor delay that actually gets more frustrating with use, especially if you're used to something a little cleaner and quicker. That being said, the included apps are a big plus.

You've got Music Unlimited (which offers a free membership) and a Reader app as well, which syncs up with any Sony eReader hardware. There's even a nifty MediaRemote app that can be used as a universal remote. Bear in mind that I did not test this. I was a little too focused on exploring the one aspect of this tablet that would appeal most to gamers: The all-important inclusion of the PlayStation Store.

For Gamers?

Well...it's there. That's about all I can say right now. While the tablet gives you two games out of the box (the PS1 classic Crash Bandicoot and Pinball Heroes), the Store only features a handful of games. In fact, only about a dozen. Given what the Store actually has when you log on with the PS3 or Vita, that's just a ridiculously low number. Still, at least the Store is available and I've been told they'll keep updating with S-compatible software. PS1 classics on the go is great, but bear in mind that such compatibility will be coming to the Vita very soon.

Overall, I'd say the Tablet S features a great design that is comfortable when held in almost any fashion, a really top-notch graphical display that captures the color saturation quality of a lot of high-res stuff, and the available Music Unlimited and Reader apps make me feel a lot better about the product. It does just about everything any other tablet does (plus a full-screen Chumby alarm clock) and perhaps a tick more, and that's important.

As is often the case in the PlayStation universe, we're examining potential when it comes to a piece of hardware. And in the case of the Sony Tablet S, I'd say gamers should at least keep an eye on it. They really need to get more Store products in there fast??but I can see video game fans going, "Yeah, this is the tablet for me."

Olympic opener showed music is best of British

LONDON (AP) ? It's not a concert, Danny Boyle stressed. It's about the athletes.

In a very real way, though, the director of the Olympic opening ceremony was wrong.

While sports are the heart of the Olympics, music ? loud, bold, world-conquering British music, amplified in the most global of settings ? was the booming beat Friday night.

One of Boyle's stated aims was to showcase "the best of us" ? and ever since the Beatles and the Rolling Stones appropriated American blues, country and rock and remade them into something new, the best of British has been music.

Music ran like a river through Boyle's "Isles of Wonder" extravaganza, which depicted a Britain brutally wrenched from its rural past by industrialization and upheaval before being thrust into a fast, uncertain, exciting new world ? all propelled by the throb of homegrown music.

It began gently, with Edward Elgar, the hymn "Jerusalem" and "Danny Boy" ? but soon started to rock.

Olympic ceremonies often play it safe. But Boyle, who brought in the electronic duo Underworld as musical directors, gave his show a cheeky edge. The Sex Pistols, once the outrageous face of punk, were included with their song "Pretty Vacant." Boyle even slipped in a few bars of the Pistols' snarling "God Save the Queen" ("the fascist regime") early on ? although he respectfully did it before Queen Elizabeth II herself had entered the stadium.

Fashion designer Wayne Hemingway said including the Pistols was typical of Boyle's "wit and guts."

"Normally it would be brushed over, but the punk spirit which is in Britain was written through the ceremony," he said. "Anyone cynical about this has no lust for life. It's just bloody brilliant."

In parts, it was like a Union Jack jukebox ? a medley of tracks from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Queen, the Specials and the Jam, the Stone Roses and Eurythmics, and what seemed like dozens more.

The list spanned generations, from The Who's "My Generation" right up to live performances from two of the hottest homegrown acts of the moment: grime star Dizzee Rascal ? who performed his hit "Bonkers" ? singer Emeli Sande and the band Arctic Monkeys.

The musical melange continued during the athletes parade, with members of the 204 national teams circling the track to everything from "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys and "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele.

The British squad entered to a roar of applause ? and Bowie's anthem-like "Heroes," while Pink Floyd played during the fireworks display.

It was only fitting that a former Beatle, Paul McCartney, closed the show, leading a mass singalong of "Hey Jude."

The amazing thing about the outpouring was how endless it seemed ? a reminder that British music, decade after decade, has retained its genius.

Could any other country have pulled off a similar homegrown aural feast? The United States, certainly. But Boyle reminded Britain how much it has to be proud of ? and the clapping, cheering, singing 60,000-strong crowd loved him for it.

Broadcast to a television audience estimated at 1 billion, it played like an excellent ad for Cool Britannia 2.0.

Singer-songwriter Billy Bragg spoke for many when he tweeted: "Impressive though (the opening ceremony) in Beijing was, they didn't have any great pop music to play, did they?"

And if you haven't heard enough, have no fear ? Universal Music said an album of the ceremony soundtrack would be on sale "within moments" of the ceremony ending.

Often, chemical sprays that are sold in the market may be effective only on small infestations and may not last long. Experts, on the other hand, are equipped with high-end pesticides that are not available in the market, and that can eradicate huge infestations. Moreover, only these experts may have the knowledge and skills to properly and safely use these dangerous products. Pesticides are considered harmful to human health, and having an N1 pest control professional handle pest infestation for you can sure save you trouble.

Aside from chemical sprays, service providers may also use mechanical methods, such as the use of traps and baits, as well as dust applicators, fumigators, fogging equipment and other state-of-the-art equipment you probably may not have seen or heard of, and that only these companies have access to.

Another advantage of hiring experts is the fact that these individuals are equipped with the ability to detect pests not just those that you have seen and sited, but also those that you may not be aware are still lurking behind your walls and ceilings. Experts also provide you advice so you can prevent future infestations. N1 pest control companies also ensure they employ the best approach to eradicating pests. They do home evaluations to identify the type of pests, their locations and how serious the infestation is. Through the process, experts will be able to come up with not just the best way to approach the problem, but also one that you are convenient with.

Pest infestation is one of the most challenging problems that homeowners often encounter at their premises. And while a do-it-yourself pest control and removal can save you bucks, hiring an expert remains the key to completely eradicating these unwanted organisms and preventing them from coming back. It is not something to hesitate about because of the expensive fees, but rather something that is worth spending your money on. After all, you are sure to reap huge benefits after the service, including keeping your family safe all the time.

If you are in Islington or around its vicinity, there are a lot of pest control companies to choose from. You just need to ensure you are dealing with a good and reliable Islington pest control company -- that is, a company that is recognized by the authorities, and one that has years of experience and knowledge in the industry.

Only go for a trusted and experienced pest control Islington company to help you get rid of pests. Visit our website to find out more about N1 pest control services.

A look at telecom-industry subscriber reports

Telecommunications companies have begun releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here is a summary of reports for selected telecommunications companies and what they reveal about their own and the industry's prospects.

? July 19: Verizon Communications Inc. says its wireless unit gained a net 1.2 million subscribers ? a strong result in an industry where subscriber gains have tapered off now that nearly everyone has a cellphone. Of the new subscribers, 888,000 were on contract-based plans, which are the most lucrative. Verizon Wireless has 94.2 million retail subscribers. The profit margin at Verizon Wireless was the highest ever, as average monthly fees for contract-signing subscribers rose 3.7 percent to $56.13. Verizon is benefiting from the growing popularity of smartphones, which come with data fees.

? Tuesday: AT&T Inc. says it saw declining smartphone sales, leading to the best profitability ever in its wireless arm as it saved on phone subsidies. It activated 5.1 million smartphones in its latest quarter, down from 5.5 million a year ago. Much of the decline came because AT&T subscribers are holding on to their phones longer. AT&T added a net 320,000 subscribers on contract-based plans in the quarter. However, more than half of the new subscribers were tablet users, who pay less than smartphone users.

? Thursday: Sprint Nextel Corp. reports it was successful in persuading smartphone subscribers to pay up for "unlimited data" service, and its service revenue zoomed, beating estimates. Sprint activated 1.5 million iPhones in the quarter, the same number as in the first quarter. By contrast, AT&T and Verizon saw a drop in iPhone activations as the excitement around the latest model, the iPhone 4S, cooled. Sprint is the only one of the four national wireless carriers that still offers unlimited data service, though it offers relatively slow data speeds.

MetroPCS Communications Inc., a provider of contract-free service, says it lost about 186,000 subscribers to end the quarter at 9.3 million.

Coming up:

? July 31: Frontier Communications Corp.

? Aug. 6: Leap Wireless International Inc.

? Aug. 8: CenturyLink Inc.

? Aug. 9: T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG; Windstream Corp.

Reducing Hearing Loss With Help From Your Hearing Center ...

Health and Fitness | General health | * Written by Alfred Ardis | Friday, 27 July 2012 07:06 | Word Count: 532

We have five senses. Imagine the loss of one. Sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing. Well people lose hearing all the time. Hearing is such an important sense. You can listen for cars coming before you cross the road, you can use hearing to relax with your favorite tunes and you might use your sense of hearing for your job. In fact, we all know when we don't hear our children it is not good news. That's what moves you to get up and check out what they are getting into. Some of these things we enjoy can cause hearing loss. You can always make an appointment at the local hearing center. They can evaluate your hearing. Let us take a minute to explore what the human ear can handle.

Relaxing with your MP3 player while you take your morning walk could cause hearing loss. Our ears can only take so much noise. To give you an idea 30dB is a whisper. 50dB is a normal conversation. A crowded restaurant could be as much as 100dB. Your ears should be able to handle this occasionally. When you leave the bar that sense of relief at the crisp night air, and near silence as you talk with your friend to the car is not something your imagining. Your ears are thankful for the break.

During the evening out with your friend your ears may have endured some damage. You may notice that your ears are ringing after your rock concert outing. By the next day your hearing should be normal. Otherwise, you may be suffering a more permanent hearing loss. This would be due to damage to the hair cells in your ears. You might notice this as not hearing so well when there is background noise. For example, not hearing your friend on the phone while the children chat in the same room. Obviously your children screaming, hollering, and jumping on the couch is another issue altogether. Another symptom of loss is tinnitus. Tinnitus is often described as a ringing, buzzing or whistle that only the patient hears. Relief is often hard to find. So how do you prevent this type of loss?

If you work in a job that has a lot of noise like construction, musician, farmer you should wear your earplugs. If you enjoy target practice you should wear earplugs. Limiting your exposure to noise is the first step in prevention. No one is saying that you should skip a night out with a friend, but take a break to step outside. Your ears will appreciate it and you will appreciate the break once you step away from the group. Stop at a local hearing center and get a hearing test. They can tell you what your hearing looks like and if any loss is something you should treat or if you can.

Not every colorado springs, co hearing center is the same. Go to http://www.miracle-ear-coloradosprings.com and find out what services work best for you.

(AP Photo/Kyodo News/China Foto Press) JAPAN OUT, MANDATORY CREDIT, NO LICENSING IN CHINA, HONG KONG, JAPAN, SOUTH KOREA AND FRANCE, NO SALES

(AP) ? Prosecutors have charged the wife of ousted Chinese politician Bo Xilai and a family aide with the murder of a British businessman, the government said Thursday, pushing ahead a case at the center of a messy political scandal that unsettled China's leadership ahead of a delicate power transition.

The state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that the recently issued indictment said Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, had a falling out with Briton Neil Heywood over money and worried that it would threaten her and her son's safety. Gu and the aide, Zhang Xiaojun, are alleged to have poisoned Heywood together, the report said. Heywood's death in November was attributed initially to a heart attack or excessive drinking.

The brief report is the first official news that the case against Gu is proceeding since the announcement three months ago that she and Zhang were being investigated and that Bo was being suspended from the powerful Politburo for unspecified discipline violations. Unmentioned in the Xinhua report was any reference to Bo or a separate party investigation into him.

"To charge a Politburo member if he was involved in any way in the murder would have sullied the reputation of the Communist Party in ways that would have been too much for the leadership to handle," said Joseph Fewsmith, a China politics expert at Boston University.

Bo's ouster and the investigation into his family presented the Communist Party leadership with its ugliest public scandal in nearly two decades. It exposed the bare-knuckled infighting that the secretive leadership prefers to hide and affirmed an already skeptical public's dim view about corrupt dealings in the party.

News of Gu's prosecution signals that the leadership has closed ranks and reached a general agreement about the case as well as arrangements to install a younger group of leaders at a party congress later this year.

"They have to try to show solidarity, because if they do not do that the consequences are alarming. It would undermine social stability" by sending a signal about divisions in the ranks, said Cheng Li, an elite politics expert at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

By making the announcement on the eve of the London Olympics, the leadership also likely hopes that public attention will be absorbed watching the Chinese team, instead of circulating political gossip, said Li. Given that the congress is still unscheduled and likely several months away, the leadership has time to dispatch Gu's and Bo's cases and allow public interest to flag in the interim, Li and others said.

In a sign that the release of the news was carefully managed, the Xinhua's report was read on state television and posted on official mainstream news sites. But it appeared to have been scrubbed off popular microblogs, where Bo and his wife's names remain banned search terms. Commenting was disabled on most sites that carried the Xinhua report, while other webpages only allowed comments in support of the prosecution.

Before his fall, Bo was one of China's most powerful and charismatic politicians. The son of a revolutionary veteran and party secretary of the Austria-sized metropolitan area of Chongqing, he was thought to be destined for a seat in the leadership's inner sanctum, the Politburo Standing Committee.

On his rise, Bo led high-profile campaigns to bust organized crime and to promote communist culture. In doing so, however, his administration ran roughshod over civil liberties that angered some leaders and alienated others with his publicity seeking.

The infighting may never have come to light, as has happened in previous leadership fights, except for the sudden flight to the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu of longtime Bo aide and former Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun in February. Apparently fearing for his safety if he remained in Chongqing, Wang told American diplomats about his suspicions that Heywood had been murdered and that Bo's family was involved.

The Xinhua report did not say when Gu's trial would be held. She and Zhang were charged in the eastern city of Hefei, far from both Beijing and Chongqing, where Heywood was found dead. Prosecutors have interrogated Gu and Zhang and have "heard the opinions" of their defense lawyers, Xinhua said.

The report also did not say when the indictment was issued or give details about the crime other than that Heywood was poisoned. It referred to Bo's wife as "Bogu Kailai," an unexplained combining of their surnames. It did not name their son, but they have only one, Bo Guagua. A graduate of Oxford University and Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, the younger Bo has become a notorious symbol among Chinese of the privilege of the elite.

Xinhua, however, made clear the government considers the verdict a foregone conclusion. "The facts of the two defendants' crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial. Therefore, the two defendants should be charged with intentional homicide," the report said.

Just over a month ago, Apple launched its svelte new MacBook Pro with Retina display. Powerful and beautiful, we all fell in love with the new device, jammed up Apple's ordering process, and prepared to queue up for a hot new Mac all over again.

Then we woke a day later to a slew of realizations: the unit is hard to upgrade, software isn't optimized for the new display, and repairs will be expensive, if not impossible. Then we heard that some Retina screens were having color issues. So we rioted. We hated it for being limited, for not being the sexy woman she promised she was the night before.

Are HR Departments to Blame for a 'Talent Crisis'? Yes, says study

Browse >
Home / HR / Are HR Departments to Blame for a ?Talent Crisis?? Yes, Says Study

?

Human resources departments aren?t providing their companies enough support for employees, talent recruitment, learning and development, and succession planning ? according to a study by a global strategic-consulting firm.

The study by The Hackett Group is entitled, ??Cracks in the Foundation: Closing the Critical Skills Gap Undermining Business Capabilities.? Its 2012 study concludes that finance, information technology, procurement and HR are all suffering from a shortfall in skills and talent.

The research included six functions:

  1. Workforce planning and succession
  2. Collaboration/knowledge sharing
  3. Retention
  4. Managing performance
  5. Learning and development
  6. Recruiting and staffing

Management complained, on average, that HR is only providing ?talent-management support? less than 35 percent of the time.

Another complaint: HR departments only deliver a comprehensive level of needed service less than 35 percent of the time.

The Hackett Group?s research echoes other 2012 studies:

?At most companies, business services functions were badly weakened by across-the-board cuts during the recent recession,? said The Hackett Group Global HR Practice Leader Harry Osle. ?Underinvestment in talent has created deficits in important skills such as business acumen, strategic thinking and analysis, change management, and process improvement capabilities.?

He also said management and HR aren?t collaborating.

?This is a dangerous situation with the potential to cripple companies that don?t address it quickly,? he added. ?While these business services functions are often considered cost-centers, they provide key services that enable companies to manage and optimize assets ranging from cash, capital and talent to technology and product/service inputs.?

There?s additional management dissatisfaction most of the time with HR:

  • Talent management service ? ?nearly 70 percent of the time
  • Collaboration and knowledge sharing ? dissatisfied or very dissatisfied ? 79 percent
  • Retention ? dissatisfied or very dissatisfied ? 70 percent

Eighteen percent o f the companies said HR delivered adequate proficiency in collaboration and knowledge sharing.

The bright spot: Thirty-three to 47 percent of companies expressed satisfaction in the level of HR services in workforce planning, performance

?Today?s changing business environment requires that business services organizations retool and radically change their mix of staff to improve their ability to directly impact on business performance,? said The Hackett Group Chief Research Officer Michel Janssen. ?Talent management is key, and business services can?t accomplish this without strong and effective support from HR.?

He did say management and HR must work harder to improvement their communication.

?Business services managers must take the lead in specifying their needs, and taking accountability for results for talent management,? he added. ?HR must provide comprehensive process and administrative support, methods and tools, training and guidance to function leaders.?

The study made more recommendations:

  • Business services must do a better job of defining and prioritizing the skills and characteristics that are truly essential for job candidates to have.
  • HR can also rely less heavily on external labor markets, and develop staff, as well as examine alternative approaches to recruiting, such as hiring less-experienced staff with development potential and permission-based recruiting.
  • ?Candidate relationship management is also a powerful emerging strategy for handling company interactions with applicants, candidates and current employees.

My sense: In view of The Hackett Group research, and the other two studies, it?s obvious that many HR professionals need training in process improvement, communication and leadership.

Upmeyer: ?It is essential that companies have quick and reliable ...

From Rep. Linda Upmeyer -

Establishing an environment that will encourage job creation and business expansion in our state has always been one of my highest priorities while in office. It is our duty as elected officials to provide stability and certainty for Iowa employers. We need to focus on policies that support job creators and encourage innovation. We also have a responsibility to shed light on issues that have the potential to negatively impact Iowa companies and fight for what is best for our great state.

One major key to job creation is ensuring companies across Iowa have access to quality broadband services. According to Connect Iowa, a broadband advocacy group, approximately 26,000 jobs are created or saved with every seven percent increase in broadband adoption.

Last March I wrote about new rules that had been proposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) which had the potential to jeopardize rural Iowa?s access to quality Broadband Internet. At that time, the FCC had proposed troubling changes to the ?Universal Service Fund?, which helped extend telephone and Internet services to rural areas. The new FCC regulations were likely to reduce funding and decrease predictability for many locally-based cooperatives and commercial telecom providers in Iowa.

New developments have recently been released by the FCC that continue to take rural Iowa down the path of reduced access to Broadband Internet. The FCC has now replaced the Universal Service Fund with the Connect America Fund, and has eliminated the access fees that many of our rural Iowa telecom providers depend on for consistent revenue.

The bulk of the new Connect America Fund will go to large companies that do not generally focus on expanding services to rural Iowa. Additionally, it is important to note that all Iowans will be affected by the new rule, because the FCC considers the entire state of Iowa to be rural, not just our small communities. This means that Iowans will continue to be taxed by the federal government to pay into the Connect America Fund, without receiving improved Internet services, while urban areas such as New York City and Chicago receive a disproportionate share of our money. Telecom consumers in Iowa will pay an extra 50 cents per month and businesses an extra dollar per month in access recovery charges, with additional charges pending in 2013 and 2014.

We live in a fast-paced world. In order to be successful in today?s business climate, it is essential that companies have quick and reliable Internet services. They must be able to seamlessly communicate with companies around the world, easily market their product or service, and effortlessly retrieve information online. While this is a federal issue, it is important that Iowans know about this matter and I encourage you to contact our federal delegation with your concerns. House Republican Leadership has sponsored a resolution opposing this change.

In other news, the Cerro Gordo County Fair and Franklin County Fair recently wrapped up. The high school softball and baseball seasons are also drawing to an end. I truly enjoy following the accomplishments of our youth throughout these various activities. We have some very talented young people in North Iowa! It?s hard to believe these staples of Iowa summers- baseball, softball, and county fairs- are already finishing up for another year. I hope you are able to fit in a nice summer vacation with your family, or just set aside some time to enjoy some of the great Iowa destinations and attractions during these remaining weeks.

(AP) ? Yogurt companies are looking to cultivate Americans' taste for dairy.

The country's top Greek yogurt maker, Chobani, is opening up its first "yogurt bar" in New York City on Wednesday as it looks to strengthen its position in a rapidly growing market. Dannon, a long-time industry giant, also opened up a shop in New York City earlier this month called The Yogurt Culture Company that serves both fresh Greek and traditional varieties.

The two companies say there are no plans yet for additional locations. But such flagship stores can add luster to a brand and help build loyal fan bases, which will be critical at a time when tastes are shifting and competition is intensifying.

Sales of Greek yogurt have more than doubled over the past five years to $1.6 billion, now accounting for about 21 percent of yogurt sales, according to Euromonitor International. That's up from 1.5 percent in 2006.

Unlike the thinner, more sugary yogurts that dominated U.S. supermarket shelves for years, Greek yogurt has a thicker consistency because of the way it's strained. For many, a big part of the attraction is that it's also low in fat and high in protein. Given its versatility in sweet and savory dishes, companies also see plenty of room for growth.

"We want to open up the horizon for the way people look at yogurt in the U.S.," says Hamdi Ulukaya, Chobani's founder and CEO. "When it comes to yogurt, America is underdeveloped."

At the Chobani store in Manhattan's trendy Soho neighborhood, there are no make-it-yourself options, as with many frozen yogurt shops where customers can pile on their own toppings. The menu will instead offer a set list of creations developed by Ulukaya, such as one that has chopped figs and walnuts with honey drizzled on top. Savory options ? like yogurt with cucumbers or olive oil ? are also available.

Orders are served in glass bowls, in single (6 ounces) or double (12 ounces) sizes for $3.75 or $4.75. Customers are given recipe cards with their orders, and can buy the ingredients such as olive oil and fruits at the store. By encouraging customers to make such yogurt dishes on their own, the idea is to make the Chobani sold in supermarkets more of a household staple.

Over at the Yogurt Culture Company near Grand Central, the philosophy is that allowing for customization will lead to growth.

"Today, you can order myriad types of coffee at a cafe," said Michael Neuwirth, a spokesman for Dannon. "We believe the same concept can apply to yogurt."

Customers can pick from traditional or Greek yogurt (more people opt for the latter) and add any amount of toppings for a set price of $5.49 for a 5-ounce cup.

"What we sell is unlike anything we sell in a supermarket," Neuwirth said, noting that yogurt is fresh and made with just milk and cultures, and no preservatives.

At Chobani, Ulukaya says his carefully choreographed dishes reflect the various ways he ate yogurt while growing up in Turkey. But there is one distinctly American option that stands out: a yogurt generously topped with thick peanut butter and jelly.

Ulukaya says that one wasn't his idea ? but he thinks it can reach kids or those not accustomed to the tart taste of Greek yogurt. As with the other creations, it's artfully served in a glass bowl and topped with sliced grapes and peanut halves for crunch.

"Maybe we can get Turkish people to like this one," Ulukaya said.
