HBT: Moyer, 49, designated for assignment by Rockies

We?ve had all kinds of fun with the story of the 49 year-old Jamie Moyer coming back from Tommy John surgery and actually landing a job in the major leagues. But now it seems that fun is over:

Sad jams.

Moyer made 10 starts for the Rockies and, overall, the results were poor. He was 2-5 with a 5.70 ERA and allowed a league-leading 75 hits in 53 and two-thirds innings while sporting a 1.733 WHIP.?For his career, Moyer is 269-209 with a 4.25 ERA in a staggering 25 seasons.

Though the end ? if this is the end ? is sad, there was never any reason to believe he?d even make it back after his Tommy John surgery. ?The story, in my view anyway, is still a happy one. One of?perseverance and determination,?even if he never pitches in the bigs again. TV movie stuff, here, and I mean that in the best way possible.

Here?s hoping he latches on someplace. Or, if he doesn?t, that he finds peace in retirement. A long delayed retirement that many pitchers with twice Moyer?s talent and physical gifts started a decade earlier than he will.

What Would You Rather Do: Watch TV Or Start An Internet Business?

What if you discover the exact steps that you will require to build a highly profitable online business starting today?

Do you know what it really takes to build an online business that makes you money all day long and generate a full-time online income?

What is your desire behind starting an online business? Is it that you want to make money just for the sake of making money? Making money is not your ultimate purpose to get started with your online business.

The ultimate purpose to get started might be something that you feel money can buy. Probably it might be getting a BMW, giving excellent education to your kids or probably having the ultimate freedom from your job.

Knowing your desire is the first step in getting started with your own business because that is what will charge you up and make sure that you take necessary actions and put in the required efforts that will take you to your ultimate goal.

The next thing you need to do is to believe in yourself that you can achieve your goal of starting a powerful online business today. Believing in yourself is the most important aspect that people fail to apply. The best way I feel that you can start believing that you can achieve your goal is to make sure that you write down your goal and feel and visualise it every single day multiple times. This will make sure that you believe exactly what you are performing and will give you the necessary feeling that will take you to your ultimate goal.

The next thing is to make sure that you have the sufficient knowledge that will take you step by step towards your goal. You should know exactly what you will be doing to set up your ultimate online business. Without knowledge it is impossible to set up a successful Internet business. The best way to get started is to hire a coach who has developed a successful Internet business himself and take his guidance in achieving your goal.

The final step you need to do is write down a step-by-step action plan that you can use to move towards your end goal. Use your knowledge that you have acquired from your mentor and use his guidance to create a step-by-step plan. Once you do this there is nothing that will stop you from achieving your dreams.

Halladay out 6-8 weeks

Bad news for the Phillies: they just got word back from the doctors on Roy Halladay and it?s serious: a strained right latissimus dorsi strain. That?ll land him on the DL, and he?s expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

This is the first time Halladay has been on the DL since 2009 and the first time with any kind of arm or shoulder problems (or problems in those areas more or less) since 2004.

Halladay has clearly not been himself this season, and this injury confirms why. ?He hits the DL with a 4-5 record and a 3.98 ERA. And with the Phillies tied for last place, four games behind Washington. ?It was being termed ?shoulder soreness.? ?While such a thing often turns out to be worse than what Halladay has ? at least he doesn?t need surgery ? but this is not run-of-the-mill shoulder soreness.

'Dogs in the City' Premiere And More Summer TV Shows About Dogs

LOS ANGELES ? Summer television used to mean reruns. This year it's gone to the dogs.

Several new shows star dogs and their owners in need of help. CBS has the lone network show in "Dogs in the City," starring comic, dog trainer and businessman Justin Silver. It's joined by documentaries on PBS and HBO and a series in the works for the Disney Channel, among others.

Each Wednesday at 8 p.m., beginning May 30, Silver will try to help hound and human tackle unsettling problems like joint custody after divorce or dealing with significant others who just moved in.

Is man or mutt usually to blame for problems? It's 50-50, he said, but "a dog's behavior is shaped by the people in its life."

Silver says he won't be the one solving problems, even though he jokes that he speaks dog. Instead he will provide techniques and experiences so owners can fix their own problems.

"It's that old adage: Give a man a fish and you'll fill his belly. Teach him how to fish and he'll never starve. I am teaching you how to fish. But no one learns how to fish perfectly in one hour. It takes constant practice."

If intervention is needed, he will call on his own pit bulls, Chiquita and Pacino. "I use my dogs as much as possible because the thing that influences dogs most is other balanced dogs," he said.

"Dogs in the City" seems to have a lot in common with "The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan" on the National Geographic Channel and "It's Me or the Dog" with Victoria Stilwell on Animal Planet. "Bad Dog!" is another Animal Planet show, although it uses videotape to capture misbehavior in a test of sorts to see how far an owner's love will stretch.

Documentaries airing in May and June explore the rewards and redemption of shelter dogs. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says between 5 million and 7 million companion animals enter shelters every year and between 3 million and 4 million of them are euthanized.

"Shelter Me," a PBS documentary, is narrated by actress Katherine Heigl and is sponsored by the pet food company co-owned by Ellen DeGeneres.

It follows an animal control officer, adoption workers, female inmates who train rescue dogs, and vets who acquire former shelter dogs.

"`Shelter Me' is about the lives that are changed when shelter pets are given a second chance," Heigl said.

Andrew J. Trotto, an Army veteran from Mission Viejo, was teamed up with Teka, a black Lab rescued from a Wyoming shelter by Freedom Service Dogs in Englewood, Colo.

"If it wasn't for her, I'd be dead right now," Trotto says in the film.

"I was an evil person. I hated you or wanted to kill you," he said, describing the PTSD demons that haunted him. "People say suicide is selfish. But when you are in the zone, you're not thinking about that. The terror in your head drives you insane. She (Teka) will wake me up out of my night terrors."

"Shelter Me" will air across the country in late May and June.

HBO will premiere a documentary called "One Nation Under Dog: Stories of Fear, Loss & Betrayal" on June 18 at 9 p.m.

The film looks at America's obsession with dogs, how far individuals will go for their pets and what it will take for people across the country to treat all dogs humanely.

The 73-minute documentary looks at the odds stacked against shelter dogs, spay and neuter education, puppy mills, dog bite victims and how some owners respond when their dog attacks.

The Disney Channel also has a new dog show in the works for the fall and while it does involve a rescue dog, that's where reality ends.

The live-action, multi-camera series called "Dog With A Blog" and revolves around a dog named Stan (who is really a 4-year-old named Kuma).

In real life, Kuma is a husky, golden retriever and border collie mix who was rescued from a shelter. In the show, he is adopted to tame a pair of feuding stepbrothers. Turns out Stan can read, write and blog.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama paid tribute Monday to the men and women who have died defending America, singling out Vietnam war veterans as an under-appreciated and sometimes maligned lot and saying that should never happen again.

Marking Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery and the Vietnam War Memorial, Obama noted that for the first time in nine years, "Americans are not fighting and dying in Iraq," and the nation was winding down its role in the conflict in Afghanistan.

"After a decade under the dark cloud of war, we can see the light of the new day on the horizon," Obama said to an audience gathered at the Arlington amphitheater lined with American flags under a warm, brilliant sun.

In this election year, Obama said the nation must remain committed to providing for the families of fallen soldiers and help returning service members seeking a job, higher education or health care benefits.

"As long as I'm president, we will make sure you and your loved ones will receive the benefits you've earned and the respect you deserve," Obama said. "America will be there for you."

Obama said sending troops into harm's way was "the most wrenching decision that I have to make. And I can promise you I will never do so unless it's absolutely necessary."

Later, at the Vietnam War Memorial, Obama honored the troops who served and died in that war, commemorating the 50th anniversary the U.S. involvement in Vietnam. The White House said the gathering would begin a 13-year program honoring those who served during the Vietnam War.

He said it was "a national shame, a disgrace" that veterans came home from Vietnam only to be "denigrated" in many quarters for their service. He said that should never happen again and said that history "will honor your service," adding that Vietnam veterans served "with just as much patriotism and honor as any before you."

"When you came home, I know many of you put your medals away," the president said. "You didn't talk to much about your service. As a consequence, the nation didn't always appreciate the chapter that came next." He said that although many Americans "turned their back on you, you never turned your back on America."

As he seeks re-election, Obama has reminded audiences about the end of the war in Iraq and the move to bring all troops home from Afghanistan by 2014. And in a campaign ad released last week, he credits U.S. servicemen who helped in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

Republican Mitt Romney was scheduled to appear Monday with Arizona Sen. John McCain, the 2008 GOP nominee, in San Diego, home to a large number of military personnel and veterans. Romney has made the case that too many veterans are returning home to poor job prospects, casting blame on Obama's economic policies.

A Bureau of Labor Statistics report in March found that 12.1 percent of U.S. Armed Forces veterans who served on active duty after September 2001 were unemployed in 2011. The unemployment rate for all veterans was 8.3 percent.

Veterans could play a significant role in the 2012 election. Exit polls in 2008 showed that Obama was supported by about 44 percent of voters who said they served in the military, while 54 percent voted for McCain, a former Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war for more than five years during the Vietnam War.

A poll released Monday by Gallup found that 58 percent of veterans support Romney and 34 percent back Obama. The results were based on a sample of 3,327 veterans who are registered voters and had a margin of error of 2 percentage points.

Several closely watched states in the election have large blocs of military voters. Florida, home to several military installations, has more than 1.6 million veterans, according to the Veterans Administration. Pennsylvania has nearly 1 million veterans, while Virginia and North Carolina each have about 800,000 veterans living in their states.

The president and first lady Michelle Obama started the day with a breakfast at the White House for families who have lost loved ones in combat.

Bringing the London Bus Network home

The afternoon Transport For London quietly launched countdown.tfl.gov.uk, a desk-beer was in my hand after our Friday Demos. Countdown tells you when busses are arriving at any of London?s 18,541 bus stops. I was due for a meeting in a pub in 20 minutes, but I thought I?d have a poke around. It quickly became clear that whilst there was not yet an official API for the data, the website itself was running from an internal API. It only took a little bit of playing before I was able to programmatically access the data and within my spare 20 minutes I had written and deployed a tiny web application redisplaying TFLs data.

I had enough to start exploring what?s possible with this data. The simplicity of the website allowed it to work on any device I tried at any size. Where could this service fit best in mine and others lives? With another 20 minutes, auto-refreshing and a bus stop search page, it was ready for the world.

I quickly got feedback from people who had made it into an OS X dashboard widget or added to their iPhone screen. Having it accessible from your pocket or work desk was unsurprisingly but pleasantly very useful.

bus.abscond.org on an iPhone

But what about our friends? and indeed our own work on media surfaces, secondary screens, information radiators and the like? I?ve always wanted to explore what can be done with the Kindle as a relatively cheap web enabled e-ink display, and it worked on mine straight away. So I taped it to the inside of the BERG office front door.

Kindle showing live bus times taped to door

It sits there, quietly updating every 15 seconds. Not glowing, not demanding attention, only offering it at the quickest of glances. As comfortable as a wall clock. From my limited testing, the 6 month old Kindle can do this for about 48 hours before needing a recharge, a figure I?m sure could be increased with some effort.

The Kindle came home with me that night (soldiering on in my bag with unnoticed updates over 3G). I tried it out in various places. The living room was my first thought, but updates from the big city outside didn?t fit well in there. Maybe, like the office, on the front door might work, but by that point I have already committed to leaving the house. All that told me was how long I was going to have to wait, enforcing the world on me, not empowering me to adapt.

Exotic particles, chilled and trapped, form giant matter wave

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Physicists have trapped and cooled exotic particles called excitons so effectively that they condensed and cohered to form a giant matter wave.

This feat will allow scientists to better study the physical properties of excitons, which exist only fleetingly yet offer promising applications as diverse as efficient harvesting of solar energy and ultrafast computing.

"The realization of the exciton condensate in a trap opens the opportunity to study this interesting state. Traps allow control of the condensate, providing a new way to study fundamental properties of light and matter," said Leonid Butov, professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego. A paper reporting his team's success was recently published in the scientific journal Nano Letters.

Excitons are composite particles made up of an electron and a "hole" left by a missing electron in a semiconductor. Created by light, these coupled pairs exist in nature. The formation and dynamics of excitons play a critical role in photosynthesis, for example.

Like other matter, excitons have a dual nature of both particle and wave, in a quantum mechanical view. The waves are usually unsynchronized, but when particles are cooled enough to condense, their waves synchronize and combine to form a giant matter wave, a state that others have observed for atoms.

Scientists can easily create excitons by shining light on a semiconductor, but in order for the excitons to condense they must be chilled before they recombine.

The key to the team's success was to separate the electrons far enough from their holes so that excitons could last long enough for the scientists to cool them into a condensate. They accomplished this by creating structures called "coupled quantum wells" that separate electrons from holes in different layers of alloys made of gallium, arsenic and aluminum.

Then they set an electrostatic trap made by a diamond-shaped electrode and chilled their special semiconducting material in an optical dilution refrigerator to as cold as 50 milli-Kelvin, just a fraction of a degree above absolute zero.

A laser focused on the surface of the material created excitons, which began to accumulate at the bottom of the trap as they cooled. Below 1 Kelvin, the entire cloud of excitons cohered to form a single matter wave, a signature of a state called a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Other scientists have seen whole atoms do this when confined in a trap and cooled, but this is the first time that scientists have seen subatomic particles form coherent matter waves in a trap.

Varying the size and depth of the trap will alter the coherent exciton state, providing this team, and others, the opportunity to study the properties of light and mater in a new way.

Workers getting priced out of health benefits

Jose Luis Pelaez Inc / Getty Images stock

Ninety percent of uninsured workers said they didn't have insurance because it was too costly.

By Allison Linn

The weak economy continues to have a harsh effect on workers? access to health insurance -- not necessarily because workers aren?t offered it but because they can?t afford it.

A new study from the Employment Benefit Research Institute finds that 55.8 percent of employees were getting health insurance directly from their employer as of April 2011, the most recent data available. That?s a nearly 5 percentage point drop from December 2007, when the economy first went into recession, and the researchers said early research shows that the number probably fell further.

The drop comes after more than a decade in which the rate of employees getting insurance in their own name held steady at around 60 percent.

It appears that it?s the cost, not the availability, of health insurance that is the primary thing keeping workers from getting insured.?Ninety percent of uninsured workers said they didn?t have insurance because it was too costly.

The study was based on government data on workers?age 18 to?64.

Paul Fronstin, director of EBRI?s health research and education program, said many employers have been gradually asking employees to foot more of the bill for their care through?higher deductibles and co-payments.

?Employers have changed their focus to managing cost by changing the quality of the coverage that?s being provided,? Fronstin said. ?You see more cost shifting and more employee responsibility when it comes to the cost of health care services.?

He said monthly premiums have not necessarily risen as much, but neither have wages. That may mean people feel like they are forking over a bigger slice of their paycheck for an insurance plan that requires higher and higher deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses.

?It?s the value of the plan that?s changed more than the premium,? he said.

Some who drop their employer?s coverage may be switching to cheaper private plans or getting covered by a spouse, partner or parent. The percentage of workers who are covered as a dependent on someone else?s plan has held steady at around 17 percent.

Is pet insurance a necessity? How important is renter's insurance? Sorting through all of the different types of insurance can be a headache, but Wall Street Journal and Market Watch columnist Jeanette Pavini has a list of what you need and what you can ignore.

Others may just be giving up health insurance altogether.

As the job market becomes stronger, some employers might start offering better?health care benefits to?compete for key employees.

But Fronstin noted that because employers generally make decisions about health care coverage six months to a year in advance, any improvements will likely lag quite a bit.

Rivera work poised to set new auction record in NY

(AP Photo/Sotheby's New York)

(AP) ? Mexican artist Diego Rivera's 1939 oil painting "Girl in Blue and White" is headlining Sotheby's Latin American art auction in New York.

If it sells for the high end of its $4 million to $6 million estimate, it could double the artist's previous record of $3 million dollars.

The painting, "Ni?a en azul y blanco," is a portrait of 10-year-old Juanita Rosas and belongs to a period in which Rivera captured the innocence of children. This piece is special because the famed muralist chose it to illustrate the catalog of the National Tribute Exhibition that the Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts organized in 1949 to celebrate his 50 years of painting.

"It is very typical of his work, especially of that period," Carmen Melian, director of Sotheby's Latin American Art department, told The Associated Press. Rivera "painted through the years the children of the help at his home and the neighbor's, and in particular he painted Juanita several times," Melian said.

It's Rivera's most important painting to be auctioned in decades, according to Sotheby's, which has promoted it as one of his two biggest paintings outside of Mexico and says it is hitting the market at the right time. Just last year the Museum of Modern Art featured a solo exhibit of Rivera's work.

"What I love the most is that it was painted in his studio," Melian said of the painting. "I have been in his studio and the floor there has been dyed green, that's why it is green in the piece. And the white wall in the background, with its mix of blue and pink, is almost like a Monet or a Renoir; the front is more realistic, the figure of the kid pops out."

Rivera's current record is $3,082,500 for the 1928 oil on canvas "Baile en Tehuantepec," ("Dancing in Tehuantepec") sold in 1995 at Sotheby's in New York.

"Ni?a en azul y blanco" could even break the auction record for Latin American art, held since 2008 by Mexican Rufino Tamayo's "Troubadour," which fetched $7.2 million.

"You never know," Melian said. "You don't see a piece like this one very often."

2 killed as Syria conflict spills over into Lebanon

Bilal Hussein / AP

Anti-Syrian gunmen seek cover during deadly overnight clashes in Beirut, Lebanon, early on Monday.

By msnbc.com news services

BEIRUT --?Gunmen fired rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns early Monday in intense street battles in the Lebanese capital, killing at least two people and wounding 18 others as fears mounted that the conflict in neighboring Syria was bleeding across the border.

The clashes in Beirut's Tariq al-Jadideh district were some of the fiercest since sectarian fighting four years ago brought Lebanon back to the brink of civil war.

Lebanon and Syria share a complex web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries, which are easily inflamed. Last week, clashes sparked by the Syrian crisis?killed at least eight people and wounded dozens in the northern city of Tripoli.

The revolt in Syria began 15 months ago, and there are fears the unrest will lead to a regional conflagration that could draw in neighboring countries. The U.N. estimates the conflict has killed more than 9,000 people since March 2011.

The violence in Beirut followed the killing of two members of a political alliance opposed to Syrian President Bashar Assad on Sunday in the north of the country.

Residents in the northern region of Akkar blocked roads and burned tires to protest against the killing and demonstrations spread south to the main coastal highway and to Beirut, where several roads were cut off.

Report: Car bomb kills 9, wounds 100 in Syria

A Reuters cameraman in Tariq al-Jadideh said shooting could be heard for almost seven hours overnight.

A roadside bomb exploded in Douma, Syria this weekend near a United Nations convoy carrying the head of a Syria ceasefire monitoring mission and a senior U.N. Official. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Security sources said the fighting pitted gunmen from the Future Movement, loyal to anti-Syrian former Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri, against the pro-Syrian Arab Movement Party headed by Shaker Barjawi.

The state news agency said two people were killed and 18 wounded.

Fragile political faultline?
The fighting underscores how the bloodshed in Syria, where Assad's regime is cracking down on an uprising against his rule, is inflaming emotions in its tiny neighbor Lebanon. Lebanon has a fragile political faultline precisely over the issue of Syria.

There is an array of?die-hard?pro-Syrian Lebanese parties and politicians, as well as support for the regime on the street level. There is an equally deep hatred of Assad among other Lebanese who fear Damascus is still calling the shots here. The two sides are the legacy of Syria's virtual rule over Lebanon from 1976 to 2005 and its continued influence since.

Inside Syrian rebel stronghold: 'The city is on mute'

The fighting was the among the most intense fighting in Beirut since May 2008, when gunmen from the Shiite Hezbollah militant group swept through Sunni neighborhoods after the pro-Western government tried to dismantle the group's telecommunications network.

More than 80 people were killed in the 2008 violence, pushing the country to the brink of civil war.

There was no sign that Hezbollah was involved in the latest violence.

'Critical period'
Many of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims sympathize with Syria's Sunni-led uprising against Assad, whose father sent forces into Lebanon during its 1975-1990 civil war. The Syrian army finally pulled out in 2005 under international pressure.

A message to Assad? War games held near Syrian border

Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Sunday: "The government is determined to continue to shoulder its national responsibilities amid this critical period in Lebanon and the region, and it will take all measures necessary to preserve civil peace."

World powers remain divided on how to end Syria's crisis. The U.S. and other Western and Arab nations have called for Assad to leave power, and the U.S. and European Union have placed increasingly stiff sanctions on Damascus. But with Russia and China blocking significant new U.N. punishments, U.S. officials are trying to get consensus among other allies about ways to promote Assad's ouster.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Obama campaign steps up Bain attacks on Romney

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's re-election campaign on Monday stepped up its criticism of Mitt Romney for cutting jobs when he was a business executive, despite a warning from a leading Obama supporter that the attacks have gone too far.

The Obama camp launched an ad featuring former workers at an office supplies business that went bankrupt after Republican candidate Romney's Bain Capital took it over in the mid-1990s.

Opponents, and even Cory Booker, the Democratic mayor of Newark, New Jersey, complained that the attacks on Romney's record at private equity firm Bain could undermine free enterprise.

Obama was forced to defend the anti-Romney strategy when he was asked about it at a news conference after a NATO summit in Chicago.

"The reason this is relevant to the campaign is because my opponent, Governor Romney, his main calling card for why he thinks he should be president is his business experience," Obama said. He said his campaign was not attacking private equity businesses in general.

"I think my view of private equity is that it is - it is set up to maximize profits and that's a healthy part of the free market," Obama said.

Monday's Obama campaign ad of nearly six minutes is set in Marion, Indiana, a swing state that Obama narrowly won in 2008. It mixes news coverage of bankruptcy at SCM Office Supplies, where 350 workers lost their jobs, with testimony from fired workers.

"To me, Mitt Romney takes from the poor and the middle class and gives to the rich. It's just the opposite of Robin Hood," said Randy Johnson, a former employee.

Starting last week, Obama's campaign launched videos attacking Romney's jobs record at Bain, focused on jobs lost after some businesses acquired by Bain went bankrupt, while company officials including Romney amassed fortunes.

DEMOCRATS AT ODDS OVER BAIN

Democrats' attempts to portray Romney as a corporate raider who is out of touch with ordinary Americans were made more difficult on Sunday by rising Democratic star Booker calling foul.

He termed "nauseating" a series of ads from Obama and his allies that slammed Romney's work at Bain.

Booker later backed off his televised comments but the damage was done for the Obama campaign, which has failed to halt a rise in opinion polls by Romney since he effectively became the Republican nominee last month.

David Axelrod, a senior campaign strategist, said Booker was off the mark.

"In this particular instance, he was just wrong," he told MSNBC. He said the ads are justified because Romney is using his business experience to boost his run for the White House.

Republicans were delighted by the disarray among Democrats. The Republican National Committee launched a fund-raising drive and online petition urging supporters to "stand with Cory," with a link to a video of Booker's remarks on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Job creation is a central theme of what is expected to be a close general election on November 6, with the outcome likely to depend on how Americans are feeling about the sluggish economy.

Former Massachusetts Governor Romney is running neck and neck with Obama in opinion polls, and surveys often show voters prefer the ex-businessman's jobs message to Obama's.

Romney's campaign released its own web video highlighting Booker's remarks, and comments by other well-known Democrats defending the private equity business.

"I agree with Mayor Booker who said that these attacks against Bain Capital and free enterprise are nauseating," Eric Fehrnstrom, a senior adviser to the Romney campaign, said on MSNBC.

Raven-Symon? Addresses, Avoid Lesbian Chatter

Raven-Symoné currently stars on Broadway in Sister Act.

But instead of answering questions about life as a pretend nun, the actress has taken to Twitter and responded to a National Enquirer report that claims she is living with AzMarie Livingston, a contestant on America's Next Top Model.

Raven-Symoné Picture

"I'm living my PERSONAL life the way I'm happiest," she wrote. "I'm not one, in my 25 year career to disclose who I'm dating. and I shall not start now. My sexual orientation is mine, and the person I'm datings to know. I'm not one for a public display of my life."

She added:

"However that is my right as a HUMAN BEing whether straight or gay. To tell or not to tell. As long as I'm not harming anyone. I am a light being made from love. And my career is the only thing I would like to put on display, not my personal life. Kisses!"

Certainly a fair point of view. But a Twitter rant is likely to simply draw more attention to an issue Symone just wants to go away. From a practical standpoint, she may have been better off confirming the rumor in a brief statement and moving on.

Clemens' accuser wraps up, gets to name names

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Brian McNamee finally got to name names in front of the jury. Andy Pettitte. Chuck Knoblauch. Mike Stanton. Roger Clemens' accuser also apologized for the medical condition that caused him to take frequent breaks. He came across as a sympathy figure in the final moments of some 26 hours on the stand, a small counterweight to three days of brutal cross-examination.

The government's case got a needed boost as it hit the homestretch Monday in the sixth week of the perjury trial that will determine whether Clemens lied to Congress in 2008 when the 11-time All-Star pitcher denied using performance-enhancing drugs.

McNamee, Clemens' former strength coach, is the only person to claim firsthand knowledge of Clemens using steroids and human growth hormone, and his integrity and credibility were attacked relentlessly last week by Clemens' lawyer. The government embarked on a rehabilitation job with its key witness during follow-up questioning Monday, then moved on to a beer expert who put a date on the infamous Miller Lite can that became a key piece of evidence and a witness who placed Clemens at a pool party at Jose Canseco's house in 1998.

Lawyers indicated to the judge that the government might wrap up its case this week, even though Tuesday will be a day off because of a conflict with U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton's schedule. Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin then said he would need seven or eight working days to present the defense's case. Both sides are working to finish before June 8, when further conflicts with Walton's schedule could cause the trial to go on recess for a month.

Before Monday, McNamee had not been allowed to say that he provided former Clemens teammates Pettitte and Knoblauch with human growth hormone, or that he helped ex-Clemens teammate Mike Stanton obtain HGH from drug dealer Kirk Radomski. The judge had ruled that such information could prejudice the jury against Clemens.

But Hardin's grueling cross-examination tipped the balance in the other direction, prosecutors argued. Hardin suggested before the jury last week that McNamee had solely or primarily targeted Clemens, and that no one had been charged in connection with McNamee's accusations, raising the issue of McNamee's credibility.

Walton therefore ruled that McNamee could name Knoblauch and Stanton as receiving HGH in 2001 when they were with the New York Yankees, and Pettitte in 2002 when he was with the Yankees. The judge instructed the jury that the names could only be used to help establish McNamee's "credibility as a witness" and cannot be used to "infer Mr. Clemens' guilt."

The government took full advantage, with prosecutor Daniel Butler using all three names repeatedly. McNamee said he was present when all three players used their HGH. Pettitte already has testified that he used HGH in 2002, so now the jury knows that McNamee was the source.

Butler also worked in quick time to build all the sympathy he could for McNamee. The jury had heard last week that McNamee has a medical condition that he wanted to keep secret, but now he revealed what it is: He is a Type 1 diabetic who uses an insulin pump, particularly when under stress. He then looked at the jury and apologized for the extra breaks.

McNamee also said "I lost my job, lost my clients" after he and Clemens were cited in the 2007 Mitchell Report on drugs in baseball. McNamee said he was led to believe that the report would not contain names when he began cooperating with its investigators. He cited his lack of work, saying the only athletes he trains now are two college students who don't pay him.

McNamee also said his marriage is over, in part due to the fallout from the Clemens case. He is going through a contentious divorce, and he said he sees his children only twice a week and that it will be "rocky road" to rebuild his relationship with them.

While the defense got McNamee to acknowledge that parts of his story have changed over time, he has not deviated from the core of his testimony ? that he injected Clemens with performance-enhancing substances in 1998, 2000 and 2001.

With McNamee finished after five-plus days on the stand, prosecutors called a Miller-Coors manager to testify about the beer can McNamee says he used to store waste after an alleged steroids injection of Clemens in August 2001. The witness, Anthony Manuele, looking at markings on the bottom of the can, was able to confirm that it would have been on shelves between August 2001 and Nov. 15, 2001 ? coinciding with McNamee's timeframe.

Hardin, on cross-examination, jabbed prosecutors by asking Manuele: "You don't sell these beer cans to keep needles, do you?"

The judge sustained a government objection, but not before Manuele could answer: "No, sir."

One of the charges against Clemens is that he obstructed Congress when he stated in a deposition that he "was not at Jose Canseco's house on or about June 9, 1998." That's the date McNamee says he saw Clemens and Toronto Blue Jays teammate Canseco talking to a mysterious third person at a pool party at Canseco's Florida home, a person McNamee said he felt had a connection to steroids. McNamee said he first injected Clemens with steroids a few days later.

So the government called Alexander Lowrey, who said he was at the party as a starry-eyed 11-year-old boy and posed for photos with both Clemens and Canseco. Prosecutors showed jurors the photos: One shows the boy on the deck of the pool, next to a smiling Clemens standing in the shallow end of the water. The former pitcher's hair is bleach-blonde, which is how Lowrey, now 25, said he recalled it.

Clemens' lawyer tried to play with the potentially faulty memory Lowrey might have of a party that happened 14 years ago. Lowrey couldn't remember some details and said he had to estimate the times he arrived and left, but he said he had a clear memory of meeting the two major leaguers.

Clemens, in his congressional deposition in February 2008, said: "I never was at the party." Later in the deposition, he said: "I wasn't here at this ? at a party that he had. I could have gone by there after a golf outing. So ? but I was not at this party."

The day's final witness was FBI fingerprint expert Elizabeth Fontaine, who testified she couldn't identify Clemens' fingerprints on the waste associated with the beer can. But she also said that doesn't necessarily prove that Clemens never handled the evidence.
