TOKYO ? A firefighter died and at least 30 others were injured in explosions at a large chemical plant in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, on Saturday, a local fire department said.
A tank of acrylic acid at major chemical producer Nippon Shokubai?s factory exploded after firefighters responded to an emergency call at 2:05 p.m., according to the city?s fire department.
Thirteen minutes later, firefighters at the scene reported an explosion at the plant, the fire spokesman said. Two other tanks exploded shortly after.
The exact nature of the explosion, the reason for the original emergency phone call from the factory and other details about the case were not immediately clear, the spokesman added.
Television footage showed a continuing blaze gutting a portion of the factory, filled with dozens of smoke stacks and a layered web of industrial piping. The blaze was finally extinguished just before midnight.
The factory is a major production hub of Nippon Shokubai and produces industrial chemicals, including acrylic acid and superabsorbent polymer, according to the company?s website.
Residents near the plant told NHK that they heard at least two explosions, with the earlier one shaking their houses and offices like a huge earthquake.
The dead man was identified as Nagahiro Yamamoto, a 28-year-old firefighter. Of the 30 injuries, 19 were firefighters, nine were plant workers and two were police officers, police reported.

Police in Mexico recently discovered a body burned beyond recognition in a remote patch of woods just off a country road. The hands and feet were missing. There was no physical evidence nearby except a school graduation ring. The body was in such bad shape that investigators couldn't even determine the gender. The only soft tissue available for genetic analysis was a burned fragment of liver, but attempts to get a DNA profile from this bit of evidence proved futile.
However, forensic investigators were able to find useful genetic material in an unusual place ? inside the guts of the maggots infesting the corpse's neck and face.
"This is the first reported case of analysis of human DNA isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of maggots used to identify a victim in a criminal case," a group of researchers from Monterrey, Mexico, wrote in a report this month in the Journal of Forensic Sciences.
Ten days before the body was found, a man claimed his daughter had been abducted. He recognized the ring, but couldn't tell if the badly burned corpse was his daughter. The investigators took a DNA sample from the man and then looked at the gut contents of three blowfly maggots from the dead body. They found traces of human DNA in the bugs' stomachs. With this evidence, they found that the victim was female, and they were able to run a paternity test, which came back with a 99.68-percent match to the man, confirming that this was his abducted daughter.
Maggots are commonly used to construct timelines for crimes, as larval development can indicate how long a victim has been dead. Attracted by gases escaping from a decomposing corpse, blowflies often show up within minutes of death, infesting parts of the body and laying their eggs there. It's the larvae that result from these eggs that serve as a timestamp; depending on the temperature they develop from egg to winged adult in a matter of 10 or so days.
But the researchers say this grim case shows how else the insects might be used as clues.
"If maggots are encountered in association with human remains, investigators could utilize this approach if the extraction of DNA from other sources is not possible," wrote the researchers, led by Marta Ortega-Mart?nez, of Universidad Aut?noma de Nuevo Le?n.

Autism Speaks
New York, N.Y. (September 28, 2012) Autism Speaks, the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, today announced the awarding of new research grants totaling nearly $5 million. "Autism Speaks is committed to continuing our research which has tremendous potential to increase our understanding of autism and addressing the needs of individuals with autism," said Autism Speaks Co-founder Bob Wright, "and we are grateful to the donors who make this research possible."
This round of grants includes studies of pre-and post-natal environmental risk factors and their interaction with autism risk genes; prenatal supplements for reducing autism risk; a web-based autism screening tool; new approaches for teaching language to nonverbal children with autism; an intervention to expand food choices in adolescents with autism who are picky eaters; a community-based parent-training program to promote social communication; acamprosate, an experimental medication for relieving social disabilities; identification of biomarkers that can predict response to autism medications; a large-scale evaluation of autism prevalence and risk factors in South Asia; and new interventions for enhancing social interaction, language and motor development.
"With each round of research grants we're seeing tremendous advances in science's ability to deliver treatments and services that transform lives," says Autism Speaks Chief Science Officer Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D. "We are lucky and thankful to partner with expert and passionate scientists in this work."
The newest Suzanne and Bob Wright Trailblazer Award was granted to Erick Mortensen, Ph.D., (Institute of Preventive Medicine at Frederiksberg Hospital, Denmark) to track the effects of pregnancy medications across generations, in children and grandchildren. Mortensen will use Denmark's national health database to identify women who took medications during pregnancy between 1969 and 1971. He will track developmental outcomes across two generations. "Studies of grandchildren are important because we now know that medications and other exposures can produce epigenetic changes that can be passed down through generations," Dr. Dawson explains. Epigenetic changes alter gene activity without changing the genetic code. The study will advance understanding of how environmental influences during pregnancy affect autism risk. Autism Speaks launched its Suzanne and Bob Wright Trailblazer Awards to support highly novel "out of the box" autism-relevant research.
This round of funding includes both two-year pilot grants to support preliminary research, often by scientists new to autism research, and three-year, full treatment grants to fund large-scale projects that build on preliminary findings as well as targeted research grants.
A full treatment grant was awarded to Craig Erickson, M.D. (Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center), who will test the effectiveness of the medicine acamprosate for treating ASD social impairment. The clinical trial will enroll 36 participants ages 5 to 17. Researchers will also examine biomarkers to better identify those likely to respond to treatment.
The second full treatment grant awarded to Aubyn Stahmer, Ph.D. (University of California, San Diego) to evaluate the effectiveness of a program focused on broad community-based dissemination of a parent-led intervention program. The "Teaching Social" curriculum helps families use daily-life techniques that improve social communication.
Pilot treatment grants were awarded to researchers to study the biology of autism, dietary, social behavior, and language interventions, including several technology applications.
Using brain imaging (magnetic resonance spectroscopy), Grainne McAlonan, Ph.D. at Kings College (London) will evaluate imbalances in GABA and glutamate. Previous research suggests that an imbalance in these brain chemicals may partly explain abnormal autism brain function. The project seeks to identify targets for medications that can relieve autism's core symptoms.
Emily Kuschner, Ph.D. at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia will develop and evaluate a program to expand the diets of adolescents with autism who are extremely picky eaters.
Anjana Bhat, Ph.D. (University of Connecticut) will evaluate a musical intervention for improving motor, social, and communication skills in children affected by autism with intellectual disability. Musical interventions have become popular in recent years and this study responds to the need to determine the effectiveness of such programs.
At Boston University, Sudha Arunachalam, Ph.D. will evaluate a low-cost computer tool for teaching word meanings to nonverbal children with ASD. And at Portland State University, Amy Donaldson, Ph.D. will examine a new social communication intervention that combines video modeling with sibling participation. Lastly, Simon Dymond, Ph.D. (Swansea University, Wales), will test a portable communication device designed to simplify and promote communication skills in nonverbal children with ASD.
Three Targeted Research Awards include one of the first studies to estimate autism prevalence in South Asia. Parul Christian, Ph.D. (Johns Hopkins University) will screen children in 600 villages in Bangladesh for ASD and will also study how vitamin supplementation during pregnancy and infancy affects autism risk. The study promises to shed light on how nutritional deficits may contribute to ASD.
Diana Robins, Ph.D. (University of Georgia) will evaluate the accuracy of a web-based version of the M-CHAT autism screen for toddlers and Gregory Young, Ph.D. (University of California, Davis) received continued funding to expand Autism Speaks Baby Siblings Research Consortium (BSRC) database. The BSRC promotes collaboration in infant sibling research. It has already provided vital support for six research studies.

About Autism
Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders autism spectrum disorders caused by a combination of genes and environmental influences. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by social and behavioral challenges, as well as repetitive behaviors. An estimated 1 in 88 children in the U.S. is on the autism spectrum a 78 percent increase in six years that is only partly explained by improved diagnosis.
About Autism Speaks
Autism Speaks is the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization. It is dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism. Mr. Wright is the former vice chairman of General Electric and chief executive officer of NBC and NBC Universal. BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Friday after Spain announced severe budget cuts meant to show international lenders and investors that the country is taking steps toward getting its debt under control.
The Spanish government on Thursday unveiled a draft budget for 2013 that cuts overall spending by ?40 billion ($51 billion). Wall Street spurted higher on the news. Many economists see the cost-cutting as a signal Spain is preparing to request financial aid from other governments and the European Central Bank.
Spain, whose banks have been hobbled by toxic assets, has so far been reluctant to ask for help because of the requirements that will likely be imposed in exchange for any aid.
Stocks were also helped by speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy.
Lorraine Tan, director at Standard & Poor's equity research in Singapore, said she believes the Chinese government is likely to introduce incentives to encourage domestic spending rather than making more money available for loans, as the U.S. Federal Reserve has done under its quantitative easing programs.
"Banks are indicating that they are not finding takers for loans," Tan said.
"The Chinese have a lot of flexibility ... the question is, they will only act on it if they think it will achieve something."
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.4 percent to 20,836.06. South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.2 percent to 1,992.12 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.2 percent to 4,394.10. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, mainland China, Thailand and the Philippines also rose.
But Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.8 percent to 8,876.77, sinking on a government report that showed industrial production fell a further 1.3 percent in August. Weak global and domestic demand is weighing on manufacturers, particularly electronics makers, who are facing intense competition from South Korean, Taiwanese and other Asian manufacturers.
The strong yen, which erodes overseas earnings and makes Japanese-made products relatively more expensive, is also eating into profits.
Major Japanese exporters got slammed. Toyota Motor Corp. fell 2.3 percent and Honda Motor Co. shed 2.7 percent. Ricoh Co. slid 3 percent.
Rising gold prices helped related shares. Hong Kong-listed Zijin Mining Co., China's largest gold miner, gained 2 percent. Australia's Newcrest Mining Ltd. jumped 3.8 percent.
Spain's budget announcement propelled Wall Street stocks to their first gain of the week, despite mixed data on the U.S. economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.5 percent to 13,485.97. The S&P 500 index rose 1 percent to 1,447.15. The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.4 percent to 3,136.60.
The U.S. government said the overall economy grew at a slower annual rate in the April-through-June quarter than it previously estimated. Companies cut orders for durable goods last month. But the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell.
Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 49 cents to $92.34 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.87 to finish at $91.85 on the Nymex on Thursday.
In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2932 from $1.2917 late Thursday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.50 yen from 77.62 yen.

The key to the test was that Seida didn't use any special apps, just the native camera mode, and the only manipulation he did was to tap the same spot on the screen each time, to focus the camera and determine the exposure.
By?comparing low-light portraits of Seida's colleague, you can see a slight reduction in noise compared to the 4S, but the picture itself is a tad?underexposed, too.
While noise was also not a problem for the Samsung Galaxy S III's 8-megapixel camera, it did lag in detail (and also appeared somewhat dim).
Outdoors, Seida challenged the phone-cams with high color contrasts and an abundance of light. The only noticeable difference between the iPhone 5 and 4S was background detail, which could be explained away by multiple factors. (Besides, having a slightly blurred background is generally preferred.)
The Galaxy struggled a bit with exposure ? towards the top, the meter is?too washed out.
The results aren't surprising.?One of the biggest leaps for the iPhone 4S was its camera ? just look at how the iPhone 4 did in the above experiments, paying special attention to the noise in the low-light shot and the over-saturation in the outdoor shot.?Meanwhile, the specs on the iPhone 5's camera never suggested a quantum leap forward.?
But Apple has promoted its camera as improved ? going so far as to say that the new A6 chip has an image signal processor that can deliver more brightness to a picture, up to two full stops. In our real-world and controlled testing, we have not seen any significant difference.?
Consumer Reports had similarly unspectacular results in its comparison test of the iPhone 5 and 4S cameras.?Though usability is better, due to the phone's overall?faster performance and bigger screen, outdoor shooting showed a?"modest step up," yet "the claimed improvements of the iPhone 5 in handling low-light shots were not apparent in our tests."
When it comes to the front-facing camera, however, the difference doesn't require expertise to spot. The FaceTime camera on the 4S supports?"VGA-quality photos and video" in the 640x480 resolution, while the new one on the 5 brings 720p HD-quality video and 1.2-megapixel stills. Seida's self-portrait shows just?what that means:

SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA -Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney called today's revised GDP numbers showing slower growth "unacceptable."
"Look at the numbers that just came out on the growth of our economy," Romney said at an American Legion Post in Springfield, Virginia, "1.3% versus Russia at four percent. China at seven to eight percent. We're at 1.3% - this is unacceptable. It is not working."
The overall economy grew at an annual rate of 1.3 percent in the spring, down from its previous estimate of 1.7 percent growth, according to data released Thursday by the Commerce Department.
The revised numbers gave Romney room to draw a comparison between himself and President Obama.
"I know what it takes to get us working," he said, "This is a real challenge for us. And this is not just one quarter. This has been going on now for years. China's growing much faster than we, Russia's growing faster than we. Our economy needs to be reinvigorated."
The economic news complimented the main message of the governor's visit with veterans today, to hammer the administration on the looming and drastic $500 billion in defense cuts, among other feral spending cuts, that will take place next year due to sequestration if Congress does not find a way around them.
"You have to have a strong economy to build a strong military," he said, blaming the Obama administration. "The White House proposes sequestration, kind of a gun to your head opportunity which is that congress couldn't get the job done properly and the president couldn't lead them?strange proposal in the first place, even stranger that it's being put in place."
Romney did not mention that some of his Republican colleagues on Capitol Hill were the ones that helped negotiate the deal with the White House and who ultimately voted the deal through Congress.
Virginia, which is home to the Pentagon, is poised to be hit especially hard by the cuts.
Over 136,000 jobs from major defense sites in the state of Virginia could be cut if Congress does not figure out an alternative. Romney said the job loss would be as "devastating" as the effect on the nation's security if sequestration is allowed to happen.
"It is still a troubled and dangerous world," Romney said, "And the idea of cutting our military commitment by a trillion dollars over this decade is unthinkable and devastating."
Romney asked for help in the battleground state, noting that "we've got to win in Virginia."
The governor told a story that would appeal to his audience, getting choked up when he spoke about a veteran he met while greeting an Honor Flight that he met on the tarmac on Toledo, Ohio last night. The group flies WWII and Korean War veterans to Washington, D.C. for a day to visit the monuments. Romney said one of the last veterans he met last night, an elderly World War II veteran in a wheelchair, really touched him.
"He turned to go through this long alleyway that had been set up with flags and people who were there to recognize each of the veterans. But he stopped the person who was pushing them, pushing him in the wheelchair. And then he reached inside his coat and took out a flag. And waved it. And we all applauded."

Hundreds of New York City high schools students have received morning-after pills since the launch of a program that provides emergency contraception through public school nurses, the city?s health department said on Monday.
Many schools around the nation have long made condoms available to students but New York health officials said they believe the city is the first to make hormonal contraceptives available.
The program, which started last year and now has been instituted at 13 high schools, allows school nurses to give students emergency contraceptive pills, designed to prevent pregnancy following unprotected sex or a contraceptive failure if taken within 72 hours. It also provides condoms, birth-control pills and pregnancy testing.

Sure we heard some early rumblings about a new tablet from Barnes & Noble, and no, we can't say we were particularly surprised by the revelation -- after all, no one expected the bookstore to sit idly by and let Amazon own the holiday shopping season with its freshly souped-up Kindle Fire line. But the company did manage to offer up a few surprises with today's announcement -- biggest of all (literally, in fact) was the launch of a 9-incher, the Nook HD+. And where the HD borrowed some style cues from B&N's Simple Touch line, its bigger brother is the aesthetic descendent of Nook tablets past, borrowing that long, skinny body and even offering up a winking reference to the carabiner that lent such a dramatic distinction to past products.
That said, we're not simply repeating the move from Nook Color to Nook Tablet here. The Nook HD+ is a far more significant upgrade, even as it pays a little tribute to its predecessors. Barnes & Noble's really gunning to make a splash in the budget tablet space this holiday season, and while the company's clearly betting on the smaller and cheaper HD to be the big seller, a company rep told us that he expects that HD+ to be a sleeper hit for the company. And certainly it's easy to see why the company's got some confidence this time around -- the device is sleek, fast, hi-res and affordable. But can it succeed in such a cutthroat market? Check out some impressions after the break and judge for yourself.

SEATTLE (AP) ? Seattle sacked Aaron Rodgers eight times but the Seahawks held just a 7-6 lead over the Green Bay Packers after three quarters Monday night.
After being held to just 87 yards in the first half, the Packers began to find their rhythm on offense in the third quarter and two field goals by Mason Crobsy pulled them within one heading into the fourth quarter.
The Seahawks kept the high-powered Packers offense searching for answers and picking their quarterback off the turf in the first half as Seattle hit Rodgers a lot more than the eight sacks.
Chris Clemons brought down Rodgers four times and Brandon Mebane and first-round draft pick Bruce Irvin both got to Rodgers twice. Irvin was causing havoc for Green Bay right tackle Bryan Bulaga in the first quarter, running around and through him for two sacks to halt drives.
The eight sacks in the first half tied the most Rodgers has ever been sacked in a game. He was sacked eight times by Minnesota in 2009. The record for most sacks in a game is 12, five times, most recently the New York Giants against Philadelphia in 2007. Seattle's team record is 11.
The Packers committed to the running game after halftime as Green Bay gained 111 yards in the third quarter. Cedric Benson managed to find running room on cutbacks to give Green Bay their first sustained drive of the game to open the third quarter.
Benson carried the ball seven times for 34 yards as Green Bay entered Seattle's red zone for the first time. But the 13-play drive stalled when a pass from Rodgers bounced off the hands of an open Donald Driver in the end zone and forced the Packers to settle for a 29-yard field goal.
A personal foul penalty on the ensuing kickoff gave Seattle good field position but the Seahawks went in reverse. Seattle started the drive on their own 42-yard line and then found themselves back on their own 15 after a false start, a 19-yard sack of Russell Wilson by Nick Perry and a delay of game penalty.
A booming punt from Jon Ryan backed the Packers up to their own 12-yard line but Green Bay was able to drive again. On third down, Rodgers rolled out to his left and found Jermichael Finley for a 31-yard gain to get the Packers out near midfield. Seattle had a chance to get off the field after holding Benson short on a third-down run, but an illegal hands to the face penalty on Brandon Browner kept the drive alive. Seattle finally came up with a stop and held Green Bay to a 40-yard field goal to pull within a point.
Benson had 52 yards on 12 carries and Rodgers was 19 of 27 for 149 yards through the third quarter. Seattle had 11 penalties for 90 yards.
Wilson connected with Golden Tate for a 41-yard touchdown pass to give Seattle the lead midway through the second quarter.
An unnecessary roughness call on D.J. Smith after a run by Seattle's Marshawn Lynch moved the ball into Green Bay territory and the Seahawks immediately took a shot at the end zone. Tate ran a double-move that beat cornerback Tramon Williams and Wilson dropped the pass in over the top to give Seattle the first score of the game.
Seattle' opening possession stalled after a false start penalty against Russell Okung moved the Seahawks into a third-and-long that they were unable to convert.
The Seahawks rode Lynch to shift field position in their favor early on. Lynch hammered away for gains for 8 yards, 6 and 6 and Wilson was 3 for 6 on the drive to push into Green Bay territory. Seattle was forced to punt and backed up the Packers to their own 1-yard line where the punt was downed by Ben Obomanu.
Green Bay was able to get out of danger but the drive stalled after an illegal hands to the face penalty on Josh Sitton backed up the Packers again. Irvin ran around Bulaga for his second sack of Rodgers.
Lynch provided the bulk of Seattle's first-half offense with 78 yards on 19 carries. Wilson was 5 of 11 for 69 yards and a touchdown.
