Video: Murder probe launched after Lancaster University student visiting Greater Manchester for Christmas is shot dead in Salford street

A man shot dead on a Salford street early this morning was a university student visiting for Christmas, police have revealed.

The 23-year-old victim, Anuj Bidve,?was shot dead after being approached by two men as he was walking with friends near a McDonald's restaurant on Ordsall Lane at around 1.35am.

One of the men produced a handgun and shot the victim at close range, before running away towards Asgard Drive . Police have not yet named the man but have now said that he was a university student visiting Greater Manchester with friends.

Anuj, a postgraduate electronics student at Lancaster University, was part of a group of nine male and female Indian students who were visiting Manchester for a short break over the Christmas holidays.

Police have said that they think neither the victim nor his friends knew his killer.

Armed officers arrived within minutes and Anuj was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

GMP are appealing for information and have released descriptions of the two men. The gunman was white, in his mid-20s, of slim build and wearing a grey top. The other man was of heavier build and wearing a black jacket.

At around midday today, police cordoned off Asgard Drive, the road to which the two men were seen running away after the shooting.

Extra patrols and an increased visible police presence will be out in the area over the coming days.

Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan, divisional commander for Salford, said: "Our deepest sympathies go out to the man?s family and friends at this very traumatic time.

"Our investigation remains at an early stage and we are building up a picture of what happened, but there appears to be no obvious motive for killing of a young student who was simply visiting Manchester for the festive period.

?This will undoubtedly cause shock and upset in our community and we share those feelings. We will relentlessly pursue every possible lead we have in order to identify the offenders and bring them to justice.

"I want to reassure people that Greater Manchester Police has already launched what will be a painstakingly thorough investigation to find who did this. We have detectives from our Major Incident Team who are highly experienced at solving murders working alongside neighbourhood officers who know this area inside and out so we already have a large team in place to investigate this murder.

"I believe the answers to who did this will lie in our community. Someone will know who was responsible and I want to implore those people to be courageous. This young man was simply visiting Manchester with his friends and has been killed, and his family deserve to see those responsible brought to justice. Please, if you know something, then do what is right and come forward ? anonymously if necessary. If it was your brother, son, husband or friend who was killed while visiting another city you would want justice, so please help us do the same.

"Over the past five years, GMP has achieved some dramatic reductions in the number of guns being fired and people being killed. Sadly, there are still people out there with access to guns and as this tragic incident shows, it takes just a second for someone with a gun to deprive a family of a loved one.

"I would again urge anyone who has information about this murder to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to call the incident room on 0161 856 5448 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Utah State University self-reliance program aids Ethiopians

Ethiopians who herd goats, sheep and cows around East Africa have long lived in isolation, generation after generation. As poverty among these communities has grown, a Utah State University-led program has sought to build their self-reliance by showing women how to diversify their families? sources of income and food, establish lending clubs and work to help everyone in the group in so-called collective activities.

While cellphones proved helpful, the program did not resort to new technology, building instead on what was already available, such as termite mounds that can be hollowed out and used as ovens.

Researchers took advantage of a devastating drought to investigate how those in the program fared compared with others from similar communities who did not participate. Their study, published this month in Science, found that participating families were better off after a drought killed up to half the region?s livestock and exposed millions to famine.

?Oftentimes when we see crises in Africa, we believe they need more drought-resistant seed or some technical solution,? said Layne Coppock, a professor in USU?s department of environment and society. ?If we can build their capability to problem solve, that may be a more effective way to tackle these problems.?

Coppock, lead author of the new study, launched the Pastoral Risk Management Project, or PARIMA, in 1999. USU?s involvement ended a few years ago, but the project continues under the direction of Ethiopian colleagues based in Addis Ababa.

?Capacity building? ? or showing the herders how to expand their economic opportunities ? can be very inexpensive. Coppock estimates it cost about $36 per participant to administer the program. PARIMA, which was funded by USAID, began when his team introduced 15 Ethiopian women to peers in neighboring Kenya, where innovative women had broken out of traditional roles.

?That was the inspiration,? Coppock said. ?Seeing people like them having such better lives even though their physical world was so similar, it blew them away.?

A hallmark of PARIMA is microfinance within the community. People pooled surplus funds and lent them to those building small enterprises. They included crushed-rock operations to supply materials for local construction projects, bakeries, local tourism programs, vegetable cash crops, dairy processing and building rental dwellings.

Story continues below

Since 2001, participants have dispensed more than 5,000 loans with a cumulative value of $645,000. That?s an average of $129 per loan. The rate of repayment ? with interest ? has been 96 percent.

By the time a three-year drought started in 2005, 59 collective-action groups had been established. With Ethiopia-based colleagues Solomon Desta and Getachew Gebru, both one-time USU research associates, and Seyoum Tezera (all three are with Managing Risk for Improved Livelihoods, the nonprofit that runs the program) Coppock set up a research protocol to gauge the program?s effectiveness.

The team identified three study groups, each consisting of up to 60 randomly chosen individuals. Two groups had undergone PARIMA training, but one came from communities that also received grants to capitalize livestock trade. A control group consisted of people from similar communities who had not participated in the program.

Researchers? survey questions were geared to assess their subjects? health, quality of life, confidence in the future, interest in their kids? education, condition of their stock and ability to generate cash income. Coppock said the groups from his program experienced less hunger, displacement and strife.

?The interventions assisted people at a time when the social-ecological system was put to a severe test,? he wrote.

More tiny, but harmful, frogs showing up in Hawaii

(AP Photo/ Honolulu Advertiser, Norman Shapiro, File)

(AP) ? The coqui is a tiny, coin-sized frog whose distinctive nightly mating calls are a beloved sound in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands. But people in Hawaii don't share the same sentiment.

The frogs have been growing in population in the state in recent years and are now starting to show up in larger numbers on Oahu ? home to most of the state's population. The frogs already have a strong foothold on the less-populated Big Island, and people there complain of being kept awake at night with a thunderous roar of chirps as thousands of male coqui simultaneously summon partners ? a mating chorus some say can be as loud as a jet airplane.

The frogs are also preventing the state's plant nurseries from exporting to some markets, and depressing some Big Island property values. The frogs aren't stopping tourists from visiting, but there's a fear they could if they spread further.

There have been just as many reports of coqui on Oahu in 2011 as the seven prior years combined, said Derek Arakaki, who helps hunt coqui frogs for the state Department of Agriculture. Before, Arakaki and two others on the coqui-eradication team would head out to capture the frogs on Oahu once a month or maybe twice a month. This year, there have been times when they've had to go coqui hunting twice a week.

The frogs are a significant problem in their non-native Hawaii because the state has no natural predators to stop their advance. As a result, they have spread quickly through the lush forests and yards near Hilo since they were accidentally introduced to the Big Island in the 1990s. They have been making a steady advance into the more heavily populated Oahu in recent years, sneaking onto the island on plants and stowing away in cars, piles of lumber, cargo pallets and whatever else that's being sent to Honolulu.

"Compared to the amount that's on the Big Island, very few are actually getting through," said Carol Okada, an Agriculture Department plant quarantine manager who heads the state's efforts to control invasive species. "But the amount that's getting through is still enough to establish a population, so we are still very concerned."

Coqui, which get their name because of their "ko-kee" chirps, are showing up in diverse places. The International Marketplace outdoor bazaar in the heart of Waikiki, the state's tourist mecca. Near a banyan tree in front of a multiplex theater. Seven coqui were found in a home in the upscale Diamond Head neighborhood. The residents had brought back some plants from the Big Island not knowing they needed to be inspected for coqui before shipping them to Oahu.

Coqui eradication team members spot them by mimicking their mating call, which prompts the frogs to call back. They hone in on the sound and trap the frogs with a clear tube. Sometimes, they'll spray water to entice the frog to sing.

In a few cases, the coqui team has found so many frogs they've had to kill them with citric acid, the preferred chemical for eradicating the frogs.

That was the case in the rural windward Oahu town of Hauula, where coqui had spread out across several homes and a city park. Residents there heard nocturnal chirping, but didn't call the state's pest control hotline because they thought birds were making the sounds. By the time the authorities were notified, the frogs had been around and breeding for two years. It took the crew several months to get rid of the infestation.

The problem is only made worse by recession-induced budget cuts that forced the state to slash the number cargo inspectors to 50 from 95.

This caused the Agriculture Department to prioritize checking out-of-state cargo, because imports are more likely to carry harmful species like snakes ? an animal that hasn't become established in Hawaii.

Okada said the state will have to capture more pests that get through because there haven't been enough people to spot them at the ports.

"When you're not at the front end, you end up chasing it on the back end," Okada said.

The state has had this problem with snakes, which could wipe out Hawaii's native endangered bird species they ever became established here. A dozen ? from boa constrictors to ball pythons ? have been either captured or turned in to authorities since July.

"There's a reason why all the snakes are coming out this year. We're not out in force anymore," Okada said.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie enabled the state to hire 10 more people to bring the inspector count close to 60, but Okada said they're still far short of where they need to be to effectively intercept pests entering Hawaii or traveling inter-island.

Okada said one scary thing about this past year was that many coqui were found closer to the base of Oahu's heavily forested mountains. The coqui population could explode if they started breeding somewhere like the back part of Manoa valley, where it frequently rains.

Authorities are asking the public to call the state's pest control hotline if they think they hear a coqui.

Working Hollywood: Animal trainer Bettina Browne

Bettina Browne trained tigers for Fox's new family film "We Bought a Zoo," but of all the felines she's recently wrangled for movies, she considers the toughest customers to be the ordinary house cats she was tasked with taming for director David Fincher's dark, biting thriller, Sony's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

"Tigers and lions are a little bit more dog-like in the sense that they still do like to please you," said Browne, who worked for Birds and Animals Unlimited on the two films. "House cats, if they feel like it, they will. But especially when you're working with them, they're like, 'Nah, I don't really want to do that. It's work.'"

Cattitudes haven't hampered Browne's lifelong love of animals, though. As an undergraduate at USC, she studied anthropology with an emphasis on primates and considered moving to South Africa to be a safari guide. But instead, she finished her degree and tried such endeavors as gallery work and fashion styling before answering the call of the wild. "I met my husband, Eric Weld, and he had just gotten into exotic animal training," she said. "I thought, 'Ah, that's what I want to do, too.'"

On her first job, she trained 7-month-old lion cubs for a Whiskas commercial. But the first time she ever worked with a full-grown male lion ? a 550-pound creature named Felix ? was on 2007's "Prey," which she considers the biggest step in her career.

"It was an unfortunate situation actually because my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, and another trainer on that movie, they got shot," she said. "The African farm they were staying at, these people came and robbed their bungalow and shot them, one in the shoulder and then my husband in his hand."

Browne stepped in to finish the movie with Felix and discovered that he responded much differently to a female rather than a male trainer. "They're a little more lovey, a little more accepting," she said.

Since then, Browne has trained animals of all sizes for films including "Step Brothers," "Angels & Demons" and "Zookeeper," but she saves the lion's share of her love for the big cats.

"Maybe it was from watching 'Born Free' when I was younger, but the big cats are really my first passion," she said. "I always have to step back while I'm working and just be amazed at the fact that I'm on leash, or I'm working a tiger or a lion, and I'm just loving the relationship that I can have with them."

Stars with stripes: Based on Benjamin Mee's memoir, director Cameron Crowe's "We Bought a Zoo" centers on a widowed journalist (Matt Damon) who moves his two children into a struggling California zoo. While Crowe focused on coaxing the best performances from the human actors, Browne turned her attention to the tigers.

"We had Katie, who played the old tiger, Spar," said Browne. "It was nothing too difficult, because it's a zoo. We did some interior shots where she would lie there, and Matt Damon would talk to her. He was very good with the tigers. We also had Kismet and Schicka, the younger tigers, who I actually hand-raised. We did have to teach them to jump up into where their indoor facility was on the movie set. They like to show off their jumping abilities. They all like to work for meat."

On a long leash: "One of the biggest and most important things that we taught the cats for 'We Bought a Zoo' was working on cables," said Browne. "The cables are black, plastic-coated steel aircraft cables, and they would attach to their collars. We had 10- and 20-foot cables, depending on the shot. Because we could not be close to them, they had to be secured so that they would be able to work together and around the actors safely."

Stop and go: According to Browne, house cats tend to work in teams of three, but in the case of the Sweden-set "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," one cat stole the show. "His name is Scotty, who is just a domestic short-haired brown tabby," she said. "He did a very good job playing all roles. He had to come in through the window, and then jump into the cottage and run across the floor into the kitchen."

Just act natural: "On 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' I definitely learned to work a cat without food, because director David Fincher likes a lot of natural action, and natural action you can't do with food," Browne said. "Scotty's very toy- and movement-driven. So I learned to work him with my hand and just little subtle movements. I had never worked with a cat in that way before, so that was fun and new. Whenever you go on set, you never know what you're getting into. You just have to have that personality where you can go with the flow."

Texas-El Paso (5-6) vs. Auburn (8-2) (ET)

GAME NOTES: The Texas-El Paso Miners and the Auburn Tigers will face off in the third-place game of the Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

The game represents just the third meeting between the Miners and Tigers, and the former has won both previous meetings, the last one taking place back in 1986.

UTEP will be playing its fifth game in nine days and enters with a 5-6 overall record. The Miners beat Clemson in the opening round of this tournament before losing to Kansas State, 78-70, its last time out. UTEP led in the second half of that semifinal-round matchup before the Wildcats staged a late comeback to end the Miners' modest three-game win streak. Coach Tim Floyd's preaches sound defense to his squad, and it has responded by holding its previous seven opponents under 70 points.

Jacques Streeter scored a season-high 15 points, including 11 in the second half, to lead the Miners against Kansas State. UTEP has shot 48.8 percent from the field in its two Diamond Head Classic games, while foes have made 38.3 percent of their field goals. Michael Perez has scored in double figures in six of the seven games, averaging 16.6 ppg during the stretch. He tallied a career-high 25 points versus Clemson on Thursday, and Perez is the only Miner to score in double figures in both Diamond Head Classic games. Cedrick Lang has reached double figures in two of the last three outings, and he tied his career-high with 12 points on Friday.

Auburn enters this contest with an 8-2 record after dropping a 64-43 decision to Long Beach State on Friday. The loss snapped a four-game win streak as the Tigers reeled off victories over South Florida, North Florida, Florida A&M and Hawaii before the 49ers knocked them off. LBSU held Auburn to a season-low 26.3 percent shooting from the field and a season-low 43 points. Coach Tony Barbee's team will try to bounce back closer to its season averages of 68.1 ppg and 44.8 percent shooting.

Frankie Sullivan was the lone bright spot for the Tigers in their last outing, as he finished with 22 points and six rebounds. Rob Chubb, Kenny Gabriel and Chris Denson, all of whom own double-digit scoring averages for the season, will need to step up against UTEP to help their team avoid its first two-game losing streak of the year.

The Tigers should be able to recover from their poor outing and get back on track against the Miners. UTEP has been playing well lately, but its rebounding ability is inferior to its counterpart in this one.

France recommends removal of risky breast implants

Dr. Maurice Mimoun, a plastic surgeon at the St Louis hospital, holds silicone gel breast implants made by French company Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP, that he removed from a patient because of concerns that they are unsafe, Paris, Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011. French health authorities are considering whether to suggest that an estimated 30,000 women in France get their breast implants removed, amid warnings by leading doctors about risks of rupture and possible cancer risks. (AP Photo/Michel Euler)

PARIS (AP) ? Tens of thousands of women with risky, French-made breast implants should have them removed at the state's expense, the health minister recommended Friday, adding that such removals were "preventive" and not urgent.

While implants made by Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP, have not been linked to an increased incidence of cancer, the risk that they could rupture and leak a questionable type of silicone gel has been shown, Xavier Bertrand said in a statement.

"As a preventive measure not of an urgent nature, (French authorities) recommend that the removal of these implants, even those not showing signs of deterioration, be proposed," the statement said. It added that the costs of removal would be footed by France's national health care system ? presumably solely for French patients.

Some 30,000 of women in France, Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal and other countries in Europe and South America have had implants made by PIP. Health authorities in those countries have been following the French decision closely and could make similar recommendations, too. The implants in question were not sold in the U.S.

Women who have had their implants burst and leading French plastic surgeons had been urging the government to act. The death last month of a woman who had the implants and developed a rare cancer catalyzed worries.

About 2,000 Frenchwomen given pre-filled silicone gel implants made by PIP have filed legal complaints against the company, based in southern France. Investigators say it saved euro1 million ($1.3 million) a year by using industrial silicone instead of more expensive silicone meant for medical use.

The French government ordered a halt to production of the implants last year and the company is being liquidated.

The main concern of doctors and patients is the uncertainty surrounding the risks of the silicone used.

"I don't know what might be inside of me," said Annie Mesnil, 62, who had a breast removed after cancer in 1999, and was given a PIP implant.

After the product was recalled last year, a mammogram and ultrasound did not reveal any problem with her implant. But she had it removed anyway, at her own expense, out of fear. When her surgeon took it out and studied it, "he discovered it had already burst."

Health officials from several European countries held a conference call Wednesday to discuss the implants.

The health council of Italy's health ministry held an emergency session Thursday to discuss the pending French decision, and asked hospitals to track down women who received silicone implants made by PIP. The ministry estimates that about 4,000 PIP implants are in use in Italy.

The ministry's health council also said the national health system would pay to have the implants removed if medical conditions required it, such as if they ruptured.

While saying there was no proof of any greater cancer risk among women with PIP implants, the council suggested that women with the implants contact their surgeons because there's a "greater probability of rupture and inflammatory reaction."

British health authorities say they see no reason so far to have the French-made implants systematically removed, and have said that there is not enough evidence of a link between silicone implants and cancer.

In the U.S., concerns about silicone gel implants in general led to a 14-year ban on their use. Silicone implants were brought back to the market in the U.S. 2006 after research ruled out cancer, lupus and some other concerns.

New method for watching proteins fold

ScienceDaily (Dec. 23, 2011) ? A protein's function depends on both the chains of molecules it is made of and the way those chains are folded. And while figuring out the former is relatively easy, the latter represents a huge challenge with serious implications because many diseases are the result of misfolded proteins. Now, a team of chemists at the University of Pennsylvania has devised a way to watch proteins fold in "real-time," which could lead to a better understanding of protein folding and misfolding in general.

The research was conducted by Feng Gai, professor in the Department of Chemistry in the School of Arts and Sciences, along with graduate students Arnaldo Serrano, also of Chemistry, and Robert Culik of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine. They collaborated with Michelle R. Bunagan of the College of New Jersey's Department of Chemistry.

Their research was published in the international edition of the journal Angewandte Chemie, where it was featured on the cover and bestowed VIP (very important paper) status.

"One of the reasons that figuring out what happens when proteins fold is difficult is that we don't have the equivalent of a high-speed camera that can capture the process, " Gai said. "If the process were slow, we could take multiple 'pictures' over time and see the mechanism at work. Unfortunately, no one has this capability; the folding occurs faster than the blink of an eye."

Gai's team uses infrared spectroscopy -- a technique that measures how much light different parts of a molecule absorbs -- to analyze proteins' structure and how this changes. In this case, the researchers looked at a model protein known as Trp-cage with an infrared laser setup.

In this experiment, Gai's team used two lasers to study structural changes as a function of time. The first laser acts as the starting gun; by heating the molecule, it causes its structure to change. The second laser acts as the camera, following the motions of the protein's constituent amino acids.

"The protein is made of different groups of atoms, and the different groups can be thought of as springs," Gai said. "Each spring has a different frequency with which it moves back and forth, which is based on the mass of the atom on either end. If the mass is bigger, the spring oscillates slower. Our 'camera' can detect the speed of that motion and we can relate it to the atoms it is made of and how that segment of the protein chain moves."

Even in a simple protein like Trp-cage, however, there are many identical bonds, and the researchers need to be able to distinguish one from another in order to see which of them are moving while the protein folds. One strategy they used to get around this problem was to employ the molecular equivalent of a tracking device.

"We use an amino acid with a carbon isotope marker," Culik said. "If it's incorporated into the protein correctly, we'll know where it is."

With a single carbon atom of the Trp-cage slightly heavier than the others, the research team can use its signature to infer the position of the other atoms as they fold. The researchers could then "tune" the frequency of their laser to match different parts of the protein, allowing them to isolate them in their analyses.

Similar isotopes could be inserted in more complicated molecules, allowing their folds to also be viewed with infrared spectroscopy.

"This technique enhances our structural resolution. It allows us to see which part is moving," Gai said. "That would allow us to see exactly how a protein is misfolding in a disease, for example."

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Softbank to quit on Myspace in Japan: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Softbank Corp will quit its domestic social networking site business after just five years, liquidating a joint venture with Rupert Murdoch's News Corp for the Japanese-language version of Myspace, the Nikkei business daily reported.

The 50-50 joint venture with U.S. media group News Corp will shut down at the end of January and be liquidated, the Nikkei reported. The Japanese-language service will be taken over by U.S. firm Myspace LLC, the newspaper added.

News Corp acquired Myspace for $580 million in 2005, when it was among the world's most popular websites, and the company's success in beating out rival Viacom Inc in a bidding war was viewed as a major victory for Murdoch.

However, since then Facebook eclipsed Myspace in popularity and in June, News Corp sold the website to advertising company Specific Media LLC and singer Justin Timberlake at a fraction of what it had paid.

News Corp continues to own its stake in the Japanese unit, the Nikkei said.

Launched in November 2006, Myspace's Japanese service tied up with record labels and sought to tout itself as a way for artists to reach fans. But it failed to offer attractive content, and had only signed up about 1.08 million users as of August, not even a 10th of Facebook's tally, the paper said.

BETHLEHEM, Conn. (AP) ? In the little town of Bethlehem, a cloistered nun whose luminous blue eyes entranced Elvis Presley in his first on-screen movie kiss is praying for a Christmas miracle.

Dolores Hart, who walked away from Hollywood stardom in 1963 to become a nun in rural Bethlehem, Conn., now finds herself back in the spotlight. But this time it's all about serving the King of Kings, not smooching the King of Rock and Roll.

The former brass factory that houses Mother Dolores and about 40 other nuns cloistered at the Abbey of Regina Laudis needs millions of dollars in renovations to meet fire and safety codes, add an elevator and make handicap accessibility upgrades.

Like 73-year-old Mother Dolores, the order's nuns have taken a vow of stability with the intent to live, work and die at the complex. The order was established in 1947 in Bethlehem, a small burg in Connecticut's rolling western hills.

Now, the historically self-supporting nuns have launched a fundraiser for the $4 million renovation project dubbed "New Horizons." They don't have much money, but they have Mother Dolores: a starlet-turned-supplicant whose unique story might lure the attention and donations of generations of movie fans, particularly those who adore all things Elvis.

"This work may not be in my lifetime that it's finished, but we're sure trying," Mother Dolores said of the upgrades, which are budgeted to run about $2 million for the fire code and accessibility compliance work and another $2 million for improvements to the housing and other facilities.

They hope to break ground in January.

They're not in imminent danger of needing to move out, but many of the older nuns can no longer navigate the narrow steps to the main building's third floor and must live in another building. And without adequate fire escapes, the monastery has caught the eye of local inspectors, though they've worked closely with the nuns on the improvement plans and haven't ordered them to close the building.

For Mother Dolores, the monastery has been home since she was a 23-year-old actress in 1963 and walked away from Hollywood for a life of contemplation and prayer as a postulant.

The abbey's chapel, workshops, livestock pastures and other features are part of her soul now, and its wood-paneled monastery is the only home she's known for 50 years. Its theater holds a special place in her heart, harkening to the former career that landed her on talk shows, in magazines and twice as Elvis Presley's co-star.

Dolores Hart was a vivacious, quick-witted blond starlet when she charmed Hollywood in the 1950s and early 1960s. She shared a kiss with Presley in the 1957 Paramount film, "Loving You" ? a modest liplock over which Mother Dolores still fields frequent questions about whether the King was a good kisser.

"I don't know why they ask me. It's right there on the screen to see; it's right there for the looking," she said Thursday.

Hart acted in 10 movies alongside stars including Montgomery Clift, Myrna Loy, Connie Francis and Anthony Quinn.

She said she was engaged to be married before joining God's service and leaving the acting world behind. She broke off her engagement, though her fiance remained a close friend and was a frequent visitor and supporter of the abbey until his recent death.

The nuns also received support and help over the years from Mother Dolores' longtime friend and fellow actress Patricia Neal, who was buried at the abbey after her death in August 2010.

Mother Dolores is still a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, receiving copies of movies to watch in her small room ? or cell, as they're known in the order ? to help select yearly Oscar winners.

Her own movies, including the highly popular "Where the Boys Are," were made before stars routinely could negotiate to collect later royalties, she said, so that's not a potential source of income for the upgrades to the abbey.

The abbey is financially independent from the Archdiocese of Hartford and supports itself through the sale of everything from artisan cheeses and hand-crafted pottery to recordings of its choir. Mother Dolores even recently signed autographs at a New Jersey convention, a rare foray out of cloistered life as a favor for a friend, and one that helped boost the fundraising efforts.

Sister Angele Arbib, a coordinator of the New Horizons renovation and fundraising efforts, said the order is applying for grants and the nuns are trying to spread the word among the abbey's supporters, but are not disclosing publicly how much they've raised so far.

Unlike some orders, the Abbey of Regina Laudis has retained a steady number of nuns and new postulants, including two starting in the next few weeks ? but that can't continue if the housing and other facilities keep eroding with age.

"We have focused on building our community, which has been wonderful, but now it's time that we really have to address our space," said Sister Angele, 63, who left a thriving career of managing opera singers when she was 50 to join the order.

"None of this, not one single thing we're doing, is an extravagance," she said of the upgrades. "It's to make it possible for us to grow, for the elderly among us to live with as much independence as possible and to allow us to live together in surroundings that let us continue our service."

Sister Angele said the nuns are not in any imminent danger of needing to move out, though she acknowledges they'd be in dire straits if they had not anticipated the problems early enough to prepare the upgrade plans and launch the fundraising efforts.

As word has spread of their needs, supporters of the nuns and those who've visited the abbey, prayed in its chapel and picked up items in its gift shop have tried to help in ways of their own.

Liz Carpenter, a Watertown resident who owns the Children's Dance Workshop, said its children have raised $600 to help through a raffle. She's been a grateful supporter since the nuns helped her through a cancer battle about 10 years ago and now volunteers to clean the church once a week.

"I wanted to teach the kids that it's important to give back," she said of their fundraiser, "especially for a place that does as many wonderful things as this one does."

__

Tax-deductible donations to New Horizons may be sent to the Abbey of Regina Laudis, 73 Flanders Road, Bethlehem, Conn., 06751. The order also plans to soon offer online donation services through its website, www.http://www.abbeyofreginalaudis.com.

The Best Spreadsheet App for Windows [Windows App Directory]

The Best Spreadsheet App for WindowsYou have a few choices when it comes to making spreadsheets, but if you're going beyond the basics, we think Microsoft Office is the most feature-filled, easy to use, and compatible program to use.

The Best Spreadsheet App for Windows

  • Create spreadsheets with integrated equations
  • Create attractive graphs from your data
  • Organize and filter your tables
  • Create thumbnail-size "sparkline" charts for viewing data at a glance
  • Visually enhance your data with boards, highlighting, and more
  • Automatically summarize your data with PivotTables
  • Use VisualBasic to create macros and add additional functionality to Excel
  • The Excel Web App will let you access your spreadsheets from anywhere
  • Comprehensive ribbon toolbar with the most commonly-used features
  • Easily filter data so you're not distracted by data you don't need to see

The Best Spreadsheet App for Windows

Excel is certainly the most feature-filled spreadsheet program out there, and fits the bill both for casual and experienced users alike. You can do everything from simple data organization to complex calculations, graphs, and script macros that perform repetitive tasks for you. The ribbon toolbar makes it easy for anyone to jump in and start using Excel, and it's graphs are pretty good looking to boot. And, while we hate for it to be a factor, Excel is by far the de facto standard for spreadsheet creation, which means if you want compatibility with XLS and XLSX files, you'll want the real deal instead of a clone.

The Best Spreadsheet App for Windows

Excel can feel overwhelming once you start to delve into its advanced features, since there are so darn many of them. But, if you're just using its basic functionality, it's still pretty easy to use. Also, it's far from cheap at $120 for a single license, but it's a necessary evil?and if you're a student (or have access to student discounts), you can usually find some better deals.

The Best Spreadsheet App for Windows

Calc, LibreOffice's answer to Excel, is more than good enough if all you need is a basic spreadsheet. When it comes to more advanced features, however, Excel does it better, and has more of them. It's also a good deal faster than LibreOffice, and unfortunately, LibreOffice still has some issues in the compatibility department. If you use Excel at work or anywhere else, you pretty much need to use it at home too?compatibility between the two isn't as good as their word processor offerings.

Google Docs is your other big choice for spreadsheet creation, and while it may feel weird to do it in a webapp, it's probably your best choice for simple spreadsheets, if only because it's the fastest free option out there. LibreOffice is a bit slow, but definitely more feature-filled?so depending on the project, you'll have to make a choice between the two if you aren't splurging for the Microsoft Office suite. Google Docs is simplistic, but still has some nice features like chart creation, support for equations, and other basic things you've come to expect from spreadsheet applications.

There aren't a ton of other spreadsheet apps out there for Windows, but if you have a favorite we didn't mention, be sure to let us know about it in the comments below.

'Alien' eggs benefit mockingbirds

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? Mockingbirds rarely remove the 'alien' eggs parasitic cowbirds lay in their nests because keeping them dilutes the risk of their own eggs being attacked.

The study, by Oxford University and Argentinean scientists, examined the behaviour of the chalk-browed mockingbird (Mimus saturninus) which is parasitized by the shiny cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) in Argentina.

A report of the research is published in this week's Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Shiny cowbirds regularly visit mockingbird nests and attack and puncture any eggs they find there -- damaged eggs are later removed by the mockingbird host. During these visits cowbirds will often lay their own eggs in the nest for mockingbirds to hatch and bring up alongside their own chicks.

Whilst mockingbirds will mob an attacking cowbird, once an alien egg has been laid in their nest they will usually accept it -- even though it looks very different from their own eggs.

The researchers recorded video of 130 cowbird visits to see what happened to the eggs in mockingbird nests over three breeding seasons. They experimentally manipulated clutch compositions to compare host egg survival in clutches with different numbers of cowbird eggs. They found that mockingbird eggs were more likely to survive a puncture attack when more cowbird eggs were present in the nest.

Computer simulations showed that this is likely to be a widespread phenomenon, and that, paradoxically, the greater the local density of parasites, the stronger the benefit hosts get from the presence of parasite eggs.

'It seems that the advantage mockingbirds gain from leaving these alien eggs in their nests is that they attract some of the destructive behaviour in later cowbird visits, and this benefit outweighs the cost of later having to rear the cowbird nestlings,' said Professor Alex Kacelnik from Oxford University's Department of Zoology, an author of the report. 'This is likely to be because, unlike other parasitic birds such as the cuckoo, mockingbird chicks do well in competition with their parasitic nest-mates -- fledging at rates similar to those of unparasitized broods.'

Of 347 mockingbird nests studied 89% were parasitized with one or more cowbird eggs, 35% receiving more than three, and 16% more than five (typically, they received around three).

'It might be expected that this high rate of parasitism would encourage a host to evolve more effective anti-parasite defences,' said Ros Gloag from Oxford University's Department of Zoology, an author of the report. 'In fact, the opposite is probably true: the higher the intensity of parasitism, the higher the frequency of puncturing attacks and the greater the importance of diluting this risk. Thus, hosts benefit more by not rejecting parasite eggs when there are more parasites around.'
